A recent lightning storm here took out the modem on my Bondi 233 iMac... i went out of town and forgot to unplug the machine, stupid stupid stupid! So rather than fix it, I decided that 3 years is a pretty good run for a computer and it's time to upgrade. I got a Graphite Special Edition iMac G3-600 with 128Meg RAM, 40Gig harddrive, and CD-RW with 3 year extended warranty from CompUSA for $1900. It came with OS 9.1 and AppleWorks 6.01.

There's a huge speed difference compared to the 233 with 96Meg, as one would expect. I also noticed a big difference in sound quality from the internal speakers... the original Bondi sounds more like a Walkman compared to the new Graphite. There's much better low end sound when listening to CD's and MP3's, and SoundJam's equilizer brings it out even more. It's not a full blown Dolby-Digital stereo, but still better than the old Bondi's.

I don't think a Graphite 600 is a '2nd gen' iMac. It's more like a 5th or 6th generation iMac.

As for sound, pick up an iSub to complement the iMac speakers.

Third, Apple really screws us on the warranty. You're forced to spend an extra $200 bucks or something just for that. Although, my experience with Macs is that I've never needed anything more than the 1yr warranty ... but still, they could compromise and make it a 2yr warranty, at least.
