YouTube - Craig Venter: On the verge of creating synthetic life

Craig Venter says he's on the verge of creating synthetic life. Oh boy!
He says that right now he can change the entire function of an organism by
replacing it's chromosomes with that of another species. He further states that
he's trying to MAKE an original chromosome and use that instead of one from
another species. I can just see this in 50 years time. We can make gay people
straight, black people white, lazy people energetic, dumb-asses smart or even
political dissidents into cheering nationalists - or all of those in the opposite
direction.

Whatever it becomes or even if it ever takes off I find the topic utterly fascinating
and quite a bit scary!

Watch the video, ignore the mention of Al Gore, sit back and ponder it for a bit
and check the emotion above that fits best or that you have first.

I call B.S. If someone were working on something this grand, YouTube wouldn't be the first to cover it.

Why not?

Do you know who Craig Venter is? (I don't.)

Besides TED covered it... It was just uploaded to YouTube. YouTube AFAIK doesn't "cover" anything.
Also I've heard of "gasoline" producing bio-organic engineered organisms before over the years. It
doesn't seem like "new" science to me... Just kind of a progress report.

Here's some more on the topic:

24C3 - Programming DNA - #2329

Kind of a look from a different angle at the same topic. It's pretty good. It's
4 months old and he's presenting 3 to 5 year old technology as defined at
the university level.

I found it interesting you included "gay people straight" and "black people white" in your list of "bad into good" things.

But I included the inverse as a component too. The point being an intellectual one of
subjective morals from the point of view of those "in power" so to speak. With these
abilities the topic will become at least to some degree not what is ethical but rather
what is doable. And doable likely only by those with the ability to do so. So far in
human history that has been defined by the political power elite structure and I think
I can safely say that most of those people are self-serving unethical tyrants who seek
to use religion, greed, bigotry, racism, nationalism, and etc. to execute agenda and
exact their own self-serving political will.

If it becomes advantageous for them to force changes on individuals bio-chemically
or eliminate certain traits or whole races they wouldn't think twice about doing so.
We see this conventionally expressed in the news almost everyday. If we can't look
at ourselves without argument we can certainly agree that this occurs quite regularly
in other nations and ethnicities. The terms "ethic cleansing" and "genocide" are indeed
legitimate and hold a very tangible meaning in reality.

Additionally these tyrants seem often to seek to subdue and subjugate the masses at
whatever costs. It would not be in their best interests to improve the abilities or quality
of the individuals who comprise those masses.
