So, I seriously need a new ipod. Really. My current one is a 1st generation MINI. Not that it doesn't work, but I feel all left out with video and what-not...

Anyways I'll probably be getting a touch at some point but I have so much music that I'm thinking a classic would fit my lifestyle best. And yet...EVERY apple store I go to, EVERY classic of the current run I try, something is missing. The click wheel seems awkward, the screen seems off...I dunno. Seems like compared to a 1st gen mini I'd be snatching up anything, but...

Is it just me?

edit: title is a bit of a misnomer, as hate is a very strong word. I'm more underwhelmed.

I am not sure what you are referring too? Do you mean color or something with the screen? The lighting in the Apple Store seems to make the color on classic's screen appear a bit off. Perhaps you should take the iPod out of the dock, the clickwheels don't always work well from an angle that the dock places them at.

The 160gb iPod classic is the best one I've owned. Great screen, gobs of storage, the click wheel is fine by my reckoning. Overall the quality is top notch.

Don't forget, you're trying a device that thousands of other people have been playing with and so, things may seem a bit off.

The click wheel is very weird on the iPod classics. I would recommend going on eBay and finding the last-gen (5.5) 80GB iPods. I used to have one before I got an iPhone, and I've actually switched back and forth and canceled my AT&T account twice because it was such an awesome device.

I definitely think the iPod classic is a good choice. I've sold plenty of them lately. Although a lot of people want the iTouch, but if you're going to be mainly using it for music, then the iPod classic is going to get you more for your money. I say keep making your visits to the Apple store, and even talk to a Specialist as well. There is no rush in making your purchase, after all you want to make sure you're happy in the end right?

I really hate the silver one. It looks cheap. Why couldn't they keep the CLASSIC white design?

I feel the same way. That was a big reason I decided to wait it out...although now I'm looking into an iPhone, which is a different beast entirely

that's my main beef. I think the click wheel sucks. Why is apple always trying to reinvent the wheel??...

Because that is the number one reason they are not just another PC maker and of course the main driver behind their unparalleled success.

[And just FTR, I love my 5G's scroll wheel.]

Video is overrated. Keep your mini.

I have an iPhone, a 40GB iPod 3G, and a 4GB mini. I still carry the iPod 3G to work and back every day because my iPhone does not hold all my music. I use the mini when I need super-long battery life (18 hours). The iPhone is a great phone, but watching video on it is a chore even with its "bigger" screen.

You misunderstood:

The classic's scroll-wheel is not the same. The 5G one rocks.

Actually I think it is you who misunderstood. I have a 5G. I know its scroll wheel rocks. And that is why I love it.

Nevertheless I am aware of the fact that Apple has to keep innovating and try out new stuff to stay on top. If I personally agree with what they come up with I buy, if not I don't. End of story.

THE SCROLL WHEEL IN THE CLASSIC IS *NOT* THE SAME AS IN THE iPOD 5G.

The one in the classic sucks.

Nobody in this thread ever claimed they were the same. Most people know the scroll wheels are different. Even w/o you throwing a little tantrum.

Ah.

I took your statement that they keep reinventing the wheel "because that is the number one reason they are not just another PC maker and of course the main driver behind their unparalleled success" as made in ignorance of the fact that the classic's scroll wheel sucks.

Because, you know, the REASON the iPod classic's scroll wheel sucks probably isn't because they've reinvented the wheel, but rather that they are acting JUST LIKE any other PC maker and switched to a cheaper OEM supplier whose parts are "good enough", but suck in comparison to what came before.

Not "cutting edge", but "cheap crap".

Perhaps you can see why your post made absolutely no sense whatsoever to me.
