Okay, I give up. I've looked through every relevant bit of documentation I can think of and run several web searches, all to no avail. Does anybody know of an API for dealing with file comments in OS X? It seems like one must exist, since several programs do it. But I've tried the seemingly "normal" ones (PBDTSetCommentSync(), etc.) and it doesn't show in X. So does anybody know where these arcane functions are?

The only way that works is to send an AppleEvent (or AppleScript command) to the Finder. At least, in 10.1.
