I was looking for a particular backpack model on the web, entered the number, and one of the sites I clicked on...
...I got a gray screen, and some "security advisor" asked me if I wanted to leave.
The red dot of Firefox was missing, so I couldn't just leave the page.
I clicked "leave page", and got another gray page, clicked on "leave page".
I tried to close Firefox, but I couldn't. The window disappeared, but I couldn't close Firefox.
I tried to restart my Mac - impossible. Tried to shut down my Mac - impossible.
Had to use the power button.
What did I run into here on the web. Some bad, bad site? Or was it just a poorly written site that crashed Firefox in the worst possible way?

You couldn't force quit (Command-Option-Esc)?
Even though it's rare on modern OSs, I've seen on occasion an errant app so effectively monopolize the resources of the computer that even though the OS isn't crashed there's no way to effectively operate at the graphical level and close the app. That's why some will keep SSH on just in case they need to remotely log into their system and kill an offending app.

I noticed that poorly written websites can immobilize a browser.
My search for another unit of an old Nike Backpack has landed me on some sites that you reach only through searches and offer nothing but a search box. Well, a malware site that freezes your browser...?

You've never used force-quit?

In this case I tried to reboot the computer, but it didn't work.

No, because the hung thread wouldn't quit. Which is why force-quit exists.
For the record and future reference:
It's in the Apple menu.
It's available through Cmd-Opt-Escape.
It's also available through clicking and holding on the hung application's Dock icon.
Note that your solution to hold the power button and shoot down the system is a completely legit last resort; there's just options available before you do that.

Yeah, next time I'll use force quit as the fire escape.
