When I download mp3 files on to my mac some how the file names are shortened. Is there a way to stop this. It also happens when I transfer files from my pc to the mac. It just looks ugly and is a pain when I try to figure out which song is which

In OS 9 there is character limit on file names (someone with more technical knowledge than myself, can probably tell you why later...). This limit is shorter than on a PC, so if you download/transfer PC files with long file names they will always be appended...

I don't know of any fix in OS 9, however, OS X can deal with huge file names...

MacOS9 limits filenames to 31 chracters. Additional characters are shortened and a hexadecimal equivalent is appended.

You can't do anything about this. Use ID3 tags for MP3 information, and view them in iTunes.

What would be great is an extension that, if a file contained ID3 information, displayed it in the Finder.

Oh well.

MacOSX supports 255 character filenames.
