So here's my deal.

I've had a full time job for 2 months now (I like it, nothing to hate about it). And I've received 3 job offers in the last week.

I've finally decided upon taking a higher paying job 10 hrs a day 40 hrs a week - Afternoons.

HOWEVER, my current employer doesn't want to see me go and has offered me part-time employment just to keep me, most likely 6 hrs a day 5 days a week. Maybe 8 hrs on fridays when I have the day off from the other job.

Am I an ass for keeping someone from potentially taking one job or the other? Especially in this time of lost jobs and rising costs? Or should I feel good that I'm so wanted?

It's really bugging me mainly because my friends can't even get full time jobs. Even the temp. agencies have nothing apparently.

Also, I might be really worn out in the end, but we'll see. Anyone else work 16+ hrs a day?

Comments? Suggestions?

Stop being a pansy and go for all four jobs.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

6 hrs each?

Cool! who needs sleep anyways? Way over-rated.

You definitely run the risk of getting burnt out. I had a job working 60-70 hour weeks (13-14 hours/day) and I got sick of it pretty fast.

It's not greedy to take what's offered you. But the hours sound like too much. I've been there, working 16-20 hours a day, and it is not worth it unless your pay is measured in jumbo jets or it's something you have a really deep, burning desire to do. The more of your time you give up, the more precious a resource the rest of your time becomes, IMO.

What if they are those "reactive" type of jobs, where you sit 90% of the day and respond to emergencies when they occur?

Go for it. Pull it off for a few months, save up some money, then take a vacation for a couple of weeks.

Any chance of getting the full time job to be 5 10's? Time and a half is a wonderful thing. I've thought about getting a 2nd job, but my regular schedule is already 5 10.5's. Burnout is definitely something to consider.

No, you've worked to get to this point and it's just fair to accept.

Greedy? Nope. Crazy? Yes.

You have to maintain a work-life balance. When you're younger, it tends to balance more towards work, but as you get older, you shift towards life -- family, friends, etc. Since I don't know where you are on that curve, you'll be the judge. Just don't commit to something now and regret it in a month.

You'll have 8 hours each day for yourself. Sleep, cook, eat, clean up, travel etc. Your days off will be spent in bed. If you decide to have a drink after your workday, the effects will be doubled.

I did 14 hour days at a printing works for 6 weeks. I paid off loads of debt, but was so tired that the next few weeks of uni were basically a waste of time.

I wouldn't do it personally, though I'm not sure how physical the jobs are.

It's not greedy at all. You're not responsible for others ability to get a job. If it's offered to you... take it.

The big variable here is the nature of the jobs. Will you be on your feet all day? Sitting and waiting for something to happen (as The Godfather mentioned)? Your age will play a big role as well.

I say try it out for a bit. Let your original employer know you'll stay on for the 6-hour days on a trial basis to see if you can handle it. Don't give him false expectations. That's the best you can do.

If you have a wife and kids, definitely do not do it. If you are single and want to date or party, don't do it. If you are socially awkward and feel that your job is a good place to hide from the world, do it.

It's not greedy... the people that are not getting jobs right now would most likely not qualify for the jobs that were offered to you.

I was about to mention that his sig makes that fairly unlikely, but then I noticed he’s changed his sig, the cheater.

Seems fine to me. But make sure you work to live; don't live to work.

Take it and do it for as long as you can. Bank all income from the 30 hours/week job. Make hay while the sun shines.

Guilt? No. Your talent, work style, whatever made you marketable and desirable to employers. Don't devalue yourself.

Ok.

I don't have a family. I already have a sig. other. I don't have a social life anyways (we are posting here right? )

The one job is chemical technician, not overly demanding, but I am on my feet.

The second higher paying job is for a refrigeration mfg company. I have no idea how demanding it will be physically, but I will be on my feet.

And my current boss is under the understanding that if I get burnt out, he'll be losing me, or cutting my hrs back even more.

Anyways, doesn't hurt to try it. I'll basically be working, eating and sleeping 4 days a week and have weekends off. I want to save a large amount of cash for a down payment on a house, buy a car, and of course buy a new Mac

Make sure you catch burn-out symptoms early.
It's not worth the money.

Plus, you risk losing BOTH jobs if you burn out.
