New SD card reader. 13" MBP has FW800 (but no audio ports?).

The 15" has a new integrated battery. 7h, should sustain 1000 cycles.

…
13" has audio; from the press release on Gizmodo:
one audio line in/out port, supporting both optical digital and analog;

Well, if I had to guess, either closer to the user— next to the SD slot, or on the other side.

I would say to the right of the SD slot, just out of frame, based on the position of the audio ports on the 15".

On the 15" it's an SD slot instead of the EC/34, right?
How much sense does that make?

Dunno. Maybe there's no reason to use an ExpressCard anymore, except as an SD card reader. For every ExpressCard device, perhaps there's a USB version; I'm fairly certain Apple looked into this market.

So one audio port to the right of the SD slot on the 13".
I would have preferred an EC/34 instead of FW800 and SD. With EC/34 everybody gets to chose what they want. Now we get what they wanted.

eSATA requires EC/34.

Are there FireWire/USB converters? (My guess is not as fast as ExpressCard, but I haven't looked into it.)

Nope.
Actually, that's usually the reason a pro would go for eSATA. You don't want any bridging between a high-performance disk's native SATA interface and the computer.

we in uk got screwed again
the mbps weere supposed to be cheaper ...
to get the same spec as the old version mbp 15" its now £1499 .. before it was £1369 !!
just .2ghz faster no express slot , ... steath tax me thinks !!
the old one has dedicated graphics card.. to have the same you have to go up in price
the cheaper 15" mbp is a macbook in disguise !!!
are apple pretending they are now cheaper , ???
you get less for your money now ....
very bad taste in my mouth Apple
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The sense that I've gotten from EC users is that they're not very reliable. eSATA ECs that fail have been reported often around here. It doesn't seem to be a technology Apple embraces, so I guess the move makes sense.

Apple must've decided no expresscard because apple's implementation just wasn't working as desired: my eSATA expresscards were/are always popping up errors and disconnects, with frequent hard crashes.
Kudos to Apple for admitting their mistake and restoring firewire. Maybe they'll restore matte displays next, hmmm? (not holding my breath on that one...)
But talk about name confusion, what with everything now being MBP, except for the lonely polycarb MB and the much-better-price MBA. All the forum threads will now have to specify whether it's about the 13" MBP or perhaps the 15" MBP, or whatever, whatever. Who's in charge of naming at Apple?

Did anyone else notice that the lowest-end 15" MBP got screwed? It only has a GeForce 9400 M in it -- no more 9600GT M.
The 13" wins, but the 15" is a loser -- no ExpressCard, no 9600GT M, same price. Wowaweewa, we get an SD card slot -- big deal, I can buy slim USB SD card readers for $5.

The low end 13" model now gets the backlit keyboard. Nice.
13" MBP $1199, $1499
15" MBP $1699, $1999, $2299
17" MBP $2499
What was the old pricing again?

Nobody got screwed. The new low-end 15" is an inexpensive portable with a 15" screen. A lot of people used to criticize Apple for not having a MB with a 15" screen. Well here it is.
The previous 15" started at $1999. The new 9400M 15" is $1699. The high-end 13" is $1499. Bascially you are paying $200 for the extra resolution.

That was pretty much my thinking; the 13″ is much, much more compelling than it once was — especially since the screen is now the same quality as the 15″ model. I’m assuming the crappy TN panel is now reserved only for the polycarbonate?
Personally, this makes upgrading somewhat more difficult; now that the 15″ hasn’t got the EC/34, and the screen are the same quality, it pretty much comes down to a choice of screen-size and speed. I was never going to buy the high-end 15″, so the difference really isn’t there anymore. I’m very, very tempted by the new 13″ model. The only potential deal breaker is the 1280×800 resolution; I really, really like high-res screens…

sorry for cross posting , im new at posting here.
but seriously, the same spec macbook pro with dedicated graphics is £130 dearer than the old spec one was this morning
on the apple store.
forget the cheapest new 15" .. thats just a macbook in my eyes .. the whole point of pro must be th egraphics card .. no ?
when i heard the guy at the conference saying now our macbbook pros are cheaper ,.. i thought great .. i had a buget of £1369,
now i get to spend the saving i make on other apple bits...
but i find to buy the mbp i need to edit hd , is now £130 more ... i would have been better off this morning in uk buying the old one,
theres hardly any difference...
how come nobody gets it ?
i see that in usa the mid 15" mbp is still $1999 .. so you guys are lucky not to have to pay $200 more like us brits ... but still saying the mbp are cheaper .. even in usa is misleading because clearly in usa the same spec 15" is exactly the same price point as it was for a mbp with dedicated graphics card
i have never owned a pc, and usually upgrade my mac every year
i think apple have really pulled the wool over your eyes guys ...
your opinions please ...

So I just want to make sure I have the deal on the MacBook line straight:
1) The $999 "white" MacBook is now the only "MacBook" (i.e., not a Pro or an Air).
2) The MacBook (white) is now the only MacBook without Mini DisplayPort
3) There is now no MacBook other than the Air that does not have FireWire.
4) All the MacBook Pros have an SD card slot
Does that sound about right?

Yep, that's right.
And we're gonna have to come up with whole new ways of not getting confused about which model is which.

Don't your prices include VAT?

If you're tracking audio or working from multiple video sources, it is very helpful to keep input and storage devices on separate busses (i.e. a second Firewire 800 bus or an eSATA port in the card slot).
This is most useful in situations where the 17" monstrosity is least useful (as in, living out of a suitcase).

Not for a lot of people.
I couldn't really care less about the graphics card. The 9400m is plenty fine for me.

Just because he doesn't need a dedicated graphics card doesn't mean he can't use a bigger screen.
In other news - placed an order for a 2.8Ghz MBP with the 256Gb SSD drive. Can't wait for it to get here.

The new displays may be better than the old ones, but I would be very surprised if they were not still TN panels.

Oh, one thing I should add:
So much for it being physically impossible to fit a FireWire 800 port on the unibody MacBooks as people have been arguing for the last half year!

Well IMO, as soon as the Mac tablet comes out it'll replace the white MacBook.

To do so they had to kill the line-in and removable battery, though. Same reason the 15" has SD instead of EC... space.

Wait a second, you're saying the 13" has the new non-removable battery type too? I missed that part.

Random, but did anyone notice Apple stopped the tradition of ordering the ports from tallest to slimmest with this new revision?
They moved the miniDP to before the USB ports (instead of after).

Yeah, that placement is interesting. Doesn't really look that right, but perhaps it made sense engineering-wise.

What exactly are the advantages of the 9600M GT? I use Parrallels to run outlook, a bunch of terminal apps, iPhoto and Safari, what apps actually take advantage of the upgraded graphics other than games?

He did the comparison almost properly. Note he took $1300, not $1199 and compared it to the UK price of £899.
I would try it this way. £899 is £782 without the 15% UK VAT. According to Google $1199 is £746. In other words Apple is asking the Brits to pay £36 (the equivalent of $58) for localization and UK distribution. Sounds fair to me.
And actually, with the GBP tanking even more the deal will likely become better by the day. Any Brit who wants to complain about the remaining difference should do so to their elected politicians rather than to Apple. Not being part of the EMU is their problem, not Cupertino.
