PalmOne has released a new version of Palm Desktop. This is to have Panther improvements and is a re-commitment to the Mac platform.

The URL seems to be

http://www.palmone.com/us/software/desktop/mac.html

I haven't gotten it yet; as soon as I tell it I want to use my Treo 180 it shoves me over to the 4.0 version. Sigh. (One can get to 4.2.1 by pretending to use a next-to-the-best Zire handheld.)

Given Palm's history I'd make surely backup my Palm User data and make sure you've got an installer for the 4.0 app.

Before you install check out their known bugs (such as that the new Send to Handheld app doesn't actually work with 10.3.2).

They're validating your info by emailing instructions on how to get the app. No more signing up as [email protected] :-)

Edit: It turns out I can't actually spell Panther. Who knew?

The GUI reminds me of OS 8.

I just don't understand why they don't give up on their own proprietary version and integrate it in to the iApps.

Hi Mitchell.

With which handheld are you trying this? I want to see whether there's a good reason PalmOne is steering users of older devices away from 4.2.1 and back to 4.0.

The direct link to the app is

http://palm.www.conxion.com/PalmDesktopMac421EN.sit

and there's a spirited conversation going on over at VersionTracker. Not everyone is happy with the results of installing.

I hope this helps.

Haven't tried this version yet, I have a visor... I'm going to hold off a few more days.

Me too.

In fact, as everything is running and iCal and Address Book seem to be fine, I may never install this (as I never run the Palm Desktop app anymore).
