I am either going to buy a 5gb Refurb ipod and a 20GB firewire drive (total cost $400).
Or...
I will buy a 20GB ipod (for $400 through someone I know ..only 1 month old in perfect condition .)
I kind of want to get the 5gb, because then in a few years I can always ebay it and grab a newer one without losing much money.
But I am afraid of the battery life issues...
Any Advice?

I'd go for the 20 GB iPod myself. I've had mines (a 5 GB model) for barely a year and I'm already considering getting a larger one. I think you'll get more life out of a 20 GB iPod rather than a 5 GB drive and an external FW drive.
Just my 2 cents!

I have a 20 gigger, and love it for music, but I really don't trust it as a backup harddrive, I have already had several corrupted files, not really sure why either.

DO NOT depend on the iPod for storage (except music). Twenty gigabytes is more space than one can handle. I mean, do you really need space for 4000+ songs at all times? I have 5GB iPod and it works just fine. So, ggat that, and then the external HD

Thanks for the help guys.
I decided to go with the 5gb refurb and a firewire drive.
I have heard the iPod isn't that trustworthy as far as data storage goes.
