Seeing some other mini + 20" combinations, I would like to know what your reasons were to buy them. The combo comes close to the 20" iMac's price.
If I compare a 20" iMac (512MB RAM, AE, BT) with my mini (1.42, 512MB, SD, AE, BT) and display, I only had to pay $200 more to get a G5 1.8GHz, 600MHz FSB, Nvidia 5200 Ultra 64MB, and 160GB SATA HDD.
My main reasons are: 1. I was not so sure, if I could do without a PC. If I had to switch back (out of the question now), I could use the display with a PC. 2. I like to have the possibility to exchange the mini for a PowerMac

Personally, I like having a separate display and cpu; it allows the freedom to mix and match.

This and increased portability. It's very rare that I need to use my PowerBook where there is not already a desk, power outlet, and display. Likewise, a Mac Mini is still just as useful as a PowerBook for doing ad-hoc presentations on an LCD projector. And let's not forget price--I'm sorry, but no, you cannot purchase a 20" iMac G5 for less than 1300 dollars. I just bought a Mac Mini and 20" wide screen LCD for this amount. And yeah, it's the same panel that Apple uses in their 20" cinema display.

Thanks for this reply, I was thinking in the two possibilities and now Im sure...Mac Mini + Cinema 20"

I ordered the mini on 1/11 and got it on 2/11.
I'm very happy with the system. I switched from a Shuttle XPC (Athlon 1800+, 768MB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD-R, WLAN), which I sold and have a PC-free home now. The mini is whisper-quiet, elegant, and fast enough for my purposes (Web, iWork, iMovie).
VERY nice...

That's an interesting setup. Presumably you use the PS2 with the S-Video or composite input on the Dell display?
Anyways, the only criticism I'd have is the mouse. I't doesn't really fit the aesthetic of the setup. Maybe a Logitech MX310/MX510 would be best!

For the sake of all that hardware, you might clean up the cables a bit to keep the area tidy. It'd look a lot better.

Cool. What sort of keyboard is that? I'm thinking along the same lines. Ideally, I'd like a Mac mini, PS2 and Gamecube sharing the same display, preferably Apple, and be able to easily switch between them. Anyone know if this is possible?

I have a 20" and it works great. I only have 256MB RAM right now, but Expos still works fine with minimal pausing. I don't know about 23". Still, 20" is still bigger than the recommendation. I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to less than 1680 for actual full time use. (In all honesty, now that I have 1680x1050, I STILL think it's not enough space! Must. Have. More. Pixels!!!)

OK, here's mine:
More pics here.
Mac Mini 1.42ghz, 80gb HD, 1gb RAM, AE, BT; PB 12" 1ghz, 80gb HD, 768mb RAM, AE, BT; 20" display.
My reason for getting the Mini with the 20" display - I don't like the iMac particularly, it'll be obsolete pretty quickly leaving me with a useless display. This way, when I'm ready to upgrade, I get a spanky G5 (G6?) tower and use it with my existing display , while the Mini moves under the TV or into the kids' room.

Hehe, mini + 20" are so common here, it looks like Apple may get a below average margin on the mini, but will compensate that with all the displays (mine included).

That last setup is so close to mine except my mouse is the highly recommended Logitech MX1000. I too wish it was white so it could match.

Hurrah!
I like the idea of using a counter and adding the legs. Where did you find the legs? Are they available at the local DIY store also? I currently use a desktop and a powerbook, Photoshop stuff on the desktop and all my email and biz stuff on the powerbook. and my desk is very cluttered and I would not, could not show it here as it would be the ridacule of messy. I also have my scanner connected to my G4/533 DP, but as luck would have it I use the scanner less and less now that I have a high mp digital camera.

I know that I've used my cousins Mac mini that's connected to his 23" ACD via ACD to DVI converter and it works like a charm. Expose works well, and I haven't noticed any distortoins yet. I'm sure It'll work fine with the 20" Dell or Apple displays.

thx, i really love the apple cinema display, but i found the displays are far too expensive, just can not afford by thoes like me who is just a student , in NZ, the display is around $2000(NZ dollar), and a mac mini(base model) just around $950, so 2*mac mini==1 apple cinema display.
Good luck with you mini and display, iREZ,cheers

I think that also holds true in the US and Europe. The 20" ACD is about the price of two minis.

Hi maCCer,
as iREZ already suggested, my mini works great with the 20" display.
Expos does get a little choppy when I have 3 or more windows open from different apps all working in the background (say a quicktime movie playing, iTunes running and Firefox downloading a page) but, other than that, it's flawless. Last night I had 13 pix opened in preview and expos didn't seem to care at all.
As for why I chose a mini+apple display, to make a long story short: I bought an iMac G5 that turned out to be the faultiest machine I had ever touched and, in order to avoid the nightmare of mid-pane replacements and the like, the reseller kindly agreed to replace it with any other apple product. So, I just decided to invest in a wonderful display to keep for years to come (silver.. and apple nonetheless!) and go with a mini.
I couldn't be happier.
Really.
My little brother got one for himself after playing with mine for a while... I switched a person in less than 2 days!

I really would enjoy a 20" ACD, but since I can't afford one, this LG has to do the trick.

I like that setup - it's extremely clean and bright-looking. Only thing I'd do is replace the MS Optical Mouse Blue with a Starck mouse or an MX310. Well, that and maybe add some speakers (unless they're off in the background).

Yes, I want to replace the mouse, too. But the current one is quite good and I don't want to get one with a substantial different shape. But the blue sux, right.
And I'm happy to report that I can take the house apart with my current speakers, if necessary.
EDIT: sort of typo

I love the mini tower too....too bad the apple sits crooked. Very impressive setups here...very tempting to pick up a mini, but I'll wait till I get a 1.67 G4 and a faster HD or better GPU.

This is my Mini which is being used only as a web/dns server. I run it without a monitor and keyboard, I use ssh and Apple Remote Desktop instead. Everyone that comes into my apartment has no idea that I have a relatively high-powered server in the corner of the room. It is very silent, so I can keep it on 24/7 without worrying about being woken up by it (I have a 1 room bachelor apartment).
I bought the cheapest Mini, and I only added ram up to 512MB. No BT, no Airport - I just wanted a machine that I could use as a server appliance. The Mini works great for this.
As for serving power? The server we have been using in my lab ( hml.queensu.ca) is an old Cube 450. We regularly get linked from Slashdot, BoingBoing, Engadget etc... Nothing seems to stop the Cube! Even when we are serving video files, and large images.
