How can I record simple speeches to a Titanium Powerbook folks? Want to burn them to a CD.
Stupid question, I know, but appreciate your answers -- including any hardware or software you recommend.
Thanks!

OSX doesn't have one build in (amazingly) besides trying to use iMovie's recorder. Try www.versiontracker.com there are few free sound recorders. You may need to tweak sound and volume settings to not get feedback if using the internal mic.

Thanks, Crusoe!
What about using Toast? Will that work? Do I buy an external USB microphone and just plug it in -- but how does it work then?
I know, DUH...not too smart about this kind of thing.

versiontracker, check out (for example) "audio in" (look for audio apps)
something like the griffin imic should do (audio to usb)...
toast is not a recording tool.
check out the shareware apps, see what u like.
try a mic into your pb.
explore!

If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

From the left field...
I use a T68i cellphone to record sound, and transfer it to my Powerbook via Bluetooth...
It transfers as a .AMR file, which can now be played via Quicktime.
Poor quality, long winded, but it gets the job done.
Peace,
Marc

I have Toast Titanium 5 and according to the literature I'm supposed to be able to use Toast for recording also.
Well, we'll see what happens.
Thanks for everyone's help.

I've tried several recording programs. While not an exhaustive test my opinion is that Audiocorder is one of the best recorders for OS X. I can record multiple hours of sound without gaps, ticks, crashes, etc.

Using WireTap implies you've already got the computer playing sound.
Pick up an iSight, upgrade to Quicktime Pro and I think you can record the audio that way. Good chance it's overkill for what you want to do, but who knows. Check this at http://www.macdevcenter.com for more info.

Get it via Version Tracker. While there you could also search for other recording programs. There are now quite a few. Some are free. Audiocorder X is shareware but only lightly crippled. Until you pay the shareware fee they start each recording with a few seconds of their message.
Audiocorder X also is scriptable with AppleScript and it has a nice scheduling feature. You can set it up to stop and start recording at desired times.

Toast doesn't do recording, period.
However, Toast Titanium does come with a program, CD Spin Doctor, that does record, as well as remove pops and clicks and whatnot. But CD Spin Doctor will not let you record using the built-in microphone, so you'll need to get an external mike. Even if your PowerBook has a line-in (not all Titaniums do), it's a line-in, not a mike-level input. So you'll need to use a preamplifier.
Or get an iMic, which has both line-in and mike inputs.

My favorite (to this day) for bare-bones audio recording is "SoundEffects 0.9.2" (I think it never made it past beta.) It is free, simple, and gets the job done. Only thing is it's a classic app. But I still havent found a better, free way to do simple audio in.
