Do you guys think I would bother posting about a neighborhood meth lab or still exploding. I sleep right through those.

This was an earthquake. The news says it was a 5.4 between Illinois and Indiana. That's a few hundred miles from where I felt it.

No. Just having fun. Kentucky is stereotyped a lot. I've never heard of a meth lab anywhere around here. And nobody makes moonshine anymore. I feel MUCH safer here than I would in any big city.

Kentucky has its problems just like anywhere, but it is nothing like the stereotype. (at least in the part where I live)

A 5-ish quake there is significant. Not because it is likely to cause serious damage, but because it's way larger than is typical. The biggest one I ever noted (in Michigan) was a 3.? in about 1975. Going from the low 3s (the usual intensity for quakes in that part of the country) to something in the 5s is literally two orders of magnitude higher. Enough to break things, move furniture, and so on. My 3 sounded like a long roll of thunder and I didn't feel it at all.

So how does this particular quake relate to the New Madrid fault? A branch of the fault, perhaps?

Felt it here in southern IL, too.

The report that I heard on the radio is that they don't think it was the New Madrid fault, at this time.

A lot of people still don't recognize the danger of the New Madrid fault zone. My dad was a geology teacher and as a kid in the 60s, I often sat in his classes during summer break and listened to him tell students that very likely within their lifetimes, a MAJOR quake would hit in that area. The last major quake there made the Mississippi flow backward for three days. The area is long over due.

California is due for a catastrophic quake at this point, and I'm predicting it will occur in 2010.

The bad news: my friend woke me up at 6:00 to tell me his parents and grandparents felt it in Kentucky. I was aggravated.

The good news: I had something to contribute to this thread (worthless information).

A recent report from the people who are in the business to know these things say that California is almost 100% certain to have a 6.7 or larger Quake within the next 30 years.

LOS ANGELES - California faces an almost certain risk of being rocked by a strong earthquake by 2037, scientists said in the first statewide temblor forecast.

New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than Northern California, 97 percent versus 93 percent.

"It basically guarantees it's going to happen," said Ned Field, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena and lead author of the report.

The 1994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude 6.7. It killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area.
Scientists say California faces an almost certain risk of a strong earthquake by 2037

We had a little 4 pointer a few months back. It was pretty funny. We were in a pizza joint and there were probably 30 or so people. The quake started and about 20 people were screaming and bolted for the doors. The rest of us just lifted our drinks off the table so they wouldn't spill.

There was a couple next to us lifting their drinks and the wife said, "So, how long have you lived here?" Hehe. (all my life. GO SHARKS!!!)

I slept through it (Indianapolis), but co-workers and their family were woken up by it and they only live about 1/2 hour away in Brownsburg, IN.

My co-worker's sister felt it in St. Louis, MO and I heard of people feeling it here. Fortunately, I was fast asleep at the time.

Must you bitch about it everywhere you go?

I was sleeping...felt it, woke up, thought "oh, that's kind of cool", rolled over, and went back to sleep. I'm from San Francisco originally...

I didn't know you were in Lafayette. I am up there every couple of month for a few days because of my work. Nice town, a nice blend of blue-collar and professional. a bit of a drug problem though.

It is true. Because of the drug problem is why I am up there. Trying to help restore lives from the destruction.

I feel like design meant "heard about it" in the sense of "on the news because it got busted" rather than "from my buddy offering me a hit."

It's a nice enough area, and living next to a major university certainly has it's perks. I'll be going to Purdue in the fall.

Watch out for the School of Engineering. They came up with a contest: "How fast can you get a charcoal grill to the perfect temperature to cook with?" Let's call this a "free form, no rules" sort of contest. The winner was counted in seconds... Look into a faculty member named George Gobel (NOT the late comedian) and see what I'm talking about. Those Boilermakers get odd...

I didn't feel that one, but I did hear a metal pull chain on a lamp clanging like it did during the first quake at about that time.
