It looks interesting, better than I thought it would, and the price and performance are attractive (no bluetooth option under BTO though). I'd like to see it in a desk setup with all of the wires hanging off it.

Still ships with a crappy video card. Apple could really help out Mac game developers if they would just put a decent, bloody video card in in the iMac.
Other than that and the low amount of RAM, they look like decent machines.

I am SO GLAD that Apple does NOT spec its all-in-one machines with solely the game developers in mind.
Developers in general are not the main target customers for iBooks and iMacs.
Btw, game developers are mostly pros, so they should be able to afford a G5 Mac.

Perhaps I should've said "game companies." Apple needs to release an affordable gaming machine. The iMac should be that machine. With a better video card, iMac owners can purchase more games over a longer period of time. More sales for the developers which will be an incentive for them to bring more game titles to the Mac.

IMHO this thing is by far the ugliest mac I've seen in a while. I'll stick with my G4 PB and get a rev b G5 PB when it's out.

Well I think it looks just great! And the UK prices are way cheaper than I thought they would be. I'm starting saving for one.

I agree. Graphics card sucks hind tit.
Head to www.apple.com/feedback and let them know what you think.
I'd also have like to have seen Firewire 2 and gigabit ethernet

Let those freakin' hardcore gamers get their Wintel boxes.
And for those that want to play a game now and then, an iMac is good enough...

I'm getting one. Amazing bang for the buck: G5, combo drive and 20 inch LCD for under $1,900. I would've liked 128 megs VRAM, but it's not a deal breaker.

... When you consider a 20" Cinema Display is 999 in the UK, 1349 for the 20" iMac G5 is nothing short of an absolute bargain.

And then it would have cost more, and l for one would not want to pay for things that I don't need (along with all the other average users out there)
Apple have to pick the right mix of features and price to hit the most buyers, which I think they have.
Most iMac buyers won't even know what Gigabit, Firewire or NVidia are !
Want to play games - buy a console and save money.

I don't think better cards should be in the base model, but they should definitely be a BTO option.

think of how sweet it will be to have bluetooth keyboard and mouse and wireless internet (since you will want an airpoirt express anyways) and the only wire is the power cable. Very cool!

Yeah and what do you get for your 1000 ( $1792 )
an extra porcessor
a smaller hard drive 80GB ( the iMac has a 160GB )
same 256mb memory
better graphics card ( just )
8 x as opposed to 4x Superdrive
slightly more expansion
faster system bus
Prior to today, I was going to order a dual 1.8Ghz Power Macintosh with 20" Cinema display and get the family one of the new iMacs whatever they turned out to be. As of 10.30 this morning I just bought a 20" iMac with Bluetooth BTO and a 17" 1.6Ghz iMac and I have spent 145 less than I would have paid on the G5 Power Macintosh on its own. BARGAIN

Not for Apple. It was a huge loss.
We don't know if that was because or despite of the high price tag ! But you bet Apple is careful to not repeat this episode.

I don't know about the rest of the market but the price tag kept me away from the Cube. I decided on mobility and got myself a PB instead.
Now the time has come for something new and I'm sure getting myself one of these new iMacs. Since I consider computer games boring as hell I have no problem with the graphics card BUT I do understand the gamergroups problem.

sure, the center of balance is in the right place when it's not plugged in, but what about when you have a wire going into every one of those ports on the back side? Won't that make it kinda hard to adjust the angle?

With respect, no, it isn't.
The 5200 isn't powerful enough to make the iMac a decent mid-range gaming machine. In a year or two, the requirements for games will be beyond it's capabilities.
We aren't asking for a $700 dollar card, but if the card is going to be hardwired into the machine - as I am sure it is - then it needs to be a card that is going to last for more than two years.
I'll probably still buy one, I need a new Mac. But apple may have just sold me a PC, and I'm not a hardcore gamer, I just want my games to run well.

people who want gaming machines will ALMOST ALWAYS go for a PC. I keep mine around for that reason. The games for apple dont seem to be ported very well .. from what i've read on this forum .. people with buffed out G5 Powermacs have issues with certain games ... games that run fine on my now ... semi midranged gaming pc...
