I just read a Washington Post article about Rolling Stones list of 100 greatests guitarists. The article speaks to the lack of female representation... Ok.. . So I took a peek at this list...

WTF??

I'm a drummer, not a guitarist, but DAMN!!! Eddie Van Halen down at #70??!?! And the Allman Bros ahead of Eric Clapton!!!?!?! I know these things are very subjective (it doesn't say how it compiled the list) but still... when you say the GREATEST GUITARISTS... I would think innovation, technique, and history among other criterias would be considered.

Listen kids, I like Nirvana, early Joan Jett, and early Ramones, but I don't think that Cobain, Jett, and Ramone really have a place on that list. Heck, they don't even list Alex Lifeson. Harrison listed but not Lennon?

first off- the first two have the benefit (for this ranking) of being dead and dying early. they didnt have a chance to make crap like "tears in heaven",

mark knopfler is too low. as are trey and eddie.

Testify, brother. Junior Brown used to play every Wendesday night at Headliners East, here in Austin, back in the late 80's. We went religiously for the better part of a year to those gigs. Then, he started up every Sunday night at the Continental Club and we made quite a few of those, too. He's a hoot. And his wife, Tanya, on the acoustic guitar-- she's a "solid" woman. Not really heavy, just... "solid."

I somehow know without even looking that Dave Gregory and Mike Keneally aren't on that list either, which means it's utterly bogus.

Knowing a bit about Morello, I'm sure he'd agree with the ranking. Edge was a huge influence on Morello, and Tom has stated in numerous interviews that he runs out to get new U2 albums the moment they are released to hear Edge's new sounds.

You can't compare guitarists like this. You have to AT LEAST group them by genre. There are just too many styles out there, and you can't compare them. Same goes for ANY instrument.

Ramones to Hold 30th Anniversary Concert

NEW YORK - Hey! Ho! Let's Go! ... to the Ramones anniversary party. On Sept. 12, the punk band will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a concert at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, Calif. The previously announced "very special guest band" will be the Red Hot Chili Peppers, concert producer Arturo Vega told The Associated Press Thursday.

CJ and Marky Ramone will perform the band's classics such as "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop." They will be joined by special guests Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and Pete Yorn. Rob Zombie will host the concert.

The 30th anniversary of the Ramones is traced back to what "The Fast Four" considered their true birth: their first concert at New York's CBGB on Aug. 16, 1974.

There will be a Ramones memorabilia exhibition before the show. Items for display will include Johnny Ramone's guitar, singer Joey Ramone's eyeglasses and the band's signature stage backdrops.

Proceeds for the already sold-out concert will go to the Lymphoma Research Foundation and the Cedars Sinai Prostate Cancer Center.

Joey Ramone, whose real name is Jeff Hyman, died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer. Johnny Ramone was treated at the Cedars Sinai hospital for prostate cancer in June.

Los Angeles punk bands X and The Dickies will open. The concert is also produced by Joe Sib, who runs SideOneDummy records.

I know that I'm talking about guitar, do you have any idea what you're talking about? Listen to the first solo on Long Tall Sally, as well as the solos on You Can't Do That, Every Little Thing, and Get Back. Those were all Lennon and they are quite good.

And just in case you didn't know, McCartney played the solos on Taxman (a Harrison song!), Ticket To Ride, and Another Girl.

I like the list. It makes sense to me that a lot of the people listed are there in their respective ranking. Joni Mitchell: if you've ever seen her play and sing, you'd realize immediately she has more talent and creativity in her left pinky finger than Dave Navarro, so she's not an issue for me. I would have liked Kevin Shields and The Edge to list higher, but that's ok. And I think Nick McCabe could have been given a better shout out - but how many people know who that is? So, it's trivial, like this whole list. Something to ponder and respect as a reflection of popular culture for today.

For the most part, I'll respect that Rolling Stone editors and writers answer to a broader group of readers than Guitar Magazine and that they thankfully trimmed away many of the technicallly gifted players who had less impact on style in popular rock and roll (Satriani) than those who inspired styles that were widely recognized for their appealling sound by non guitarists and non air guitarists alike.

Joni Mitchell is on the list because she was very influential in terms of tunings. She did stuff that no one had done before.

John Lennon wasn't known for guitar playing. He played some wonderful stuff - I'd rather listen to him than any of the hot dogs - but he wasn't noted for it.

The main surprise to me is the low ranking of Neil Young. He isn't as facile as the hot-dogs but can say more in one measure than the lot of them.

It's a pretty meaningless ranking.

Harrison was a better guitarist, period. Most in the industry will tell you the same. Look at any of the "all-time" guitarist lists that have been published over the years. I doubt on any will you find Lennon ranked above Harrison.
