This topic was inspired by the "Switch" thread below, but I thought it would stand alone very nicely:

What Macs have you given a home in your house? Meaning Macs you've paid for yourself, not through work. Personally I think I should own a chunk of Apple Computers plc by now.

Myself:

hm. well, I thought I might be the oldest in the group, but I see I'm in good company, although I've worked on a large variety of macs at work, at home I've not always upgraded often, so my list is smaller:

macplus (later upgraded the memory with ramdoubler --not the software, but the chip holder)
mac IIsi
Motorola Starmax 300/2000
G4/400 yikes PCI mac.
however, consider this covers a continuous period from mid '80s to present.

I feel so unfortunate in comparison to all of you...when I was born there was a ][e, then 9 years later a Performa 6115CD (blazingly fast and top of the line back in '94, but evolved into a piece of **** mainly due to the beating AOL gave it) and am currently still using my B/W G3 350 that is now three years old.

A Brief History of Time

used to have a 486DX/50 machine and in '93 went to Mac:

(in chonological order)
a second hand Macintosh Portable got me hooked on Macs. From the day I got it, I never used my 486 again!

I finally got a 'proper' desktop Mac: a spanking new Macintosh IIvi! (it was a 16MHz version of the IIvx, not sold in the U.S.)

Not too long after, I needed more power in the form of a second hand Macintosh IIfx

Finally replaced my PC laptop with a PowerBook 165. Not a bad machine, that one .. a real 'quiet achiever'.

I soon got annoyed with file synchronisation issues etc. so enter a PowerBook Duo 270c with DuoDock. The Duo concept was fabulous, by the way.

Then went for the first true desktop replacement PB: PowerBook 540c, but soon cracked and just had to get a PPC: PowerMac 7100/66AV. I was also given a Mac 512K by a friend, and to this day it still works!

For some reason I traded to a PowerMac 8100/80AV. I actually found this machine quite poor, it crashed often, not even a logic board upgrade seemed to help. It was this time (1996), with the lack of the promised "new, stable Mac OS" (which eventually became MacOS X) and a general lack of vision in the Apple camp, I moved back to PC land with Win95 and a Toshiba Satellite Pro.

I found Win95 was quite good, but what a hunk of junk that was hardware-wise, always fell apart -- was introduced to Windows NT 4.0 and an IBM ThinkPad 760 -- wow, 110% quality. Was stolen, and replaced with an IBM ThinkPad 365.

Then a series of PC desktops followed (P200MMX, PII-266, Celeron-366, PIII-600, Athlon-1200, P4-1600). The Athlon was a complete crapbox, and put me completely off the current PC trend of "faster, cheaper, nastier". The P4 that replaced it was flawless, though. During this time I also had a IBM ThinkPad 600, and a PowerMac 7300/200, which I got just 'cause I could get one for cheap. Later junked the desktop and used the ThinkPad for everything.

Ended up getting get a bit bored of PCs, nothing against them, Win2000 is great, I just had the itch for a Mac again and with MacOS X finally being out and semi-mature the itch was bigger than ever.. and just last month I accidentally spilt a drink over the ThinkPad, completely ruining it. I needed to buy a new laptop, fast. And ... what a perfect time to move back to the Mac world with a PowerBook G4 667 (DVI)

The machines I've owned. Some of these I had only for a short period of time but they count because I did in fact own them, and they also pad my list (I basically conviced my university's tech dept to route all machines they didn't want to me... some I had to fix or swap dead mobos, but I got my hands on about 30-40 working Macs and and a handful of printers. I eventually sold them for very good marked-down prices to some schools, but I cleaned up on volume! Damn! )

Apple II

Powerbook G3-400 SCSI

Was a nice machine, had hardware DVD and ran my classic apps well. This was before firewire. I thought OSX would run well on it so hung on to it for a while. I was wrong. OSx was **** on it. I sold this machine in June 2001.

iMac G3-466
This was a toilet seat piece of **** that I replaced with a crap Sony Vaio within a day. It looked good from the magazine reviews but when actually using the 800x600 screen and seeing how poor the TV out was I decided to pass. I couldn't get a refund, hence the exchange.

Power Mac Dual G4 450.
This was a decent machine too. I was deeply disappointed by the speed intitially as it was not as fast as a Pentium III 800 despite Apple's claims. Then OSX came out and from the first day it sucked. This machine connected to the net via modem and had dual CPUs. I must have been the first person to see the DP/PPP kernal panic bug. So this machine had to be sold too even though Classic was fine.

Powerbook G4-400
Lovely really. I had never been so creative with a computer until I got this machine. What gave me the creativity was the wider screen and lovely styling. I loved using it. OSX.1 also ran very well on it but alas this machine had little video ram, little hard drive space and little processing power for the future. I knew OSX was going to get fatter within a year.

Powerbook G4-550
This is what I upgraded to in order to handle the next major update of OSX and to get extra processing power. Apple was kind enough to drop the price of the new models and fix some problems such as the paint pealing off easily and the cooling the system. This machine had a faulty optical drive and had to go back to Apple for a week though. It has been perfect since.

Power Mac Dual 1Ghz. I scrapped using PeeCees all together and thought that a good powerful Mac would run VPC well enough and give me a decent OSX installation and speed. I was wrong. I suffered the time/date bug on DP Macs, I suffered kernal panics when connecting to the net, I suffered from a lighter bank account too! And OSX wasn't much better on it than a single CPU system. So it went back to the store and I got instead...

iMac Superdrive
This baby was lovely out of the box and was pretty fast enough. I also built a new fast PeeCee shortly after to get my Windows gaming, net and TV stuff back. This Mac actually died after a month due to a fault hard drive and Apple sent a technician to fix it. Since then it has been flawless but I still wait for 10.2 in order to get all the speed I should get out of it.

My ideal Mac: Powerbook G4 with the same velvetty and durable black body of the Powerbook G3 but with a wide screen and running at 1Ghz.

I have owned the following macs:

Mac SE - 1987 to present
Powerbook 180 - 1993 to 2001
Centris 650 - 1995 to 2001
Powermac 8100 - 1998 to present
Powermac 7600 - 1998 to 2000
Powermac 9500 - 1999 to present
Powerbook G3 Pismo - 2000 to present
Powermac G4 AGP (Sawtooth) - 2000 to present

I'm thinking about replacing the 8100 with a G3 upgraded PowerTower,
but I haven't done that yet.

Mooched friends' Macs (didn't even dig Windows as a wee lad -- which is, I'm sure, KH would say, because I was much TOO STUPID to use it, making the Mac my obvious favoring choice ) all my life, until I had enough to buy the iMac when it first came out (233, 96MB, 4GB). Was a fine machine ... until it was zapped in a storm while I was at school. Poor thing. I miss it.

Current setup: dual-800. Awesome machine for all of my graphics work.

Next setup: Jan. 2003 or MWNY 2003 -- we shall see.

My first mac was a Performa 6115CD. At great machine. I've upgraded it to a 300mhz G3 and max out the ram. My brother uses it for Word, web browsing and email.

My second machine was an original iMac DVSE. I loved this machine. The speed difference between the iMac and the Performa was like night and day. Using iMovie for the first time just blew my mind away. Later I taped some EL cable inside the case as you can kind of see below. This picture was taken with my old and trusty QuickTake 200.

And finally...
to my most recent purchase, a PowerBook Ti 800. The best computer I have had the pleasure of using. Combine it with wireless internet and it is the next best thing to slice bread. Compared to the iMac, OS X is much more snappier, I can only imagine what Jaguar will bring. Here's a picture of my Ti next to my iPod (5gig) and my gameboy advance (all with backlite displays. )

1995
*Performa 630CD (33MHz 68040LC), with whopping 8MB RAM and something like 350MB HD. A very special machine. Loved it. (OS 7.1 to 7.5)

1997
*PowerBase 180, (180MHz PPC 603e), came with 32MB RAM and a staggering 1GB HD. Last but not least a 2MB ATi Rage3D. A clone, I never became too attached to.(OS 7.5 to OS 8.1)

1999
*Powermac G3 (300MHz G3), with garguntan 128MB RAM and 6GB HD. It had some kind of a 64-bit ATi (4MB?), but I don't recall. This is my favorite desktop machine to date. Immensly powerful...

2002
*iBook 600 combo (600MHz G3), with insane 384MB RAM and 20GB HD. This little fella is my life today. With Airport and OS X, I have found my new favorite.

Looking back, I see that I have never owned a topoftheline Mac. This has got to change. Just, not soon. <no money, see>

I only discovered computers a little over 2 years ago and in that time I have owned:

Blueberry iMac 350
Titanium 400
Pismo 400
iBook 500

and currently:

iBook 600/30GB/640MB/ airport
Titanium 667 DVI 48GB/768M/B airport

Before I bought the iMac, I had never touched a computer of any kind.
Guess you could say I've become obsessed.
Expensive habit!
