Agreed! it's so nice to have the ability to have filenames in Japanese (not to mention it's neccessity to do so within iTunes)
One of the major reasons I switched from pc to mac

windows doesn't have unicode?

and yes, it is very cool, though useless to me...

Windows NT, 2000, and XP has Unicode. 98 and ME had a Unicode extention of some kind I *THINK*. I know 98 and ME had multibyte, but I'm not 100% sure about Unicode on 9x.

its about time is all i have to say..

not that im not happy that they incorporated unicode support, but it still needs a little more work. Right to left support has some issues when you try and write in hebrew/arabic and have english words in it for example.
DOS Computers manufactured by companies such as IBM, Compaq, Tandy, and millions of others are by far the most popular, with about 70 million machines in use worldwide. Macintosh fans, on the other hand, may note that cockroaches are far more numerous than humans, and that numbers alone do not denote a higher life form. -- New York Times, November 26, 1991

Of course, this could be done, as evidenced by the fact that zsh is already closer to tcsh in this regard. Switch to zsh for the terminal, then mess around with the encodings and you will find that some of them let you enter , , etc. but that unfortunately they don't quite work right - if you cd to a folder that contains files with these special characters and ls, they'll still show up as question marks, and typing the name with the special characters won't actually get the files. But it's a start...

Charles--
It's funny you mention this: Mil and I were just having a <a href="http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=46;t=007682" target="_blank">discussion</a> about that. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Well I Came from Win98:SE and stuffed if I knew how to get it to work properly. I downloaded the Japanese IME, and reader, and the only things I could get Japanese to read and input in were IE, and Outlook Express - No programs, no filenames, no gui - ONLY IE and Outlook.

Too bad some applications don't fully support unicode.
For example, my name viewed in explorer looks weird but like it should be when in Omniweb.

It only works with apps that use HTML (Internet Explorer, Outlook, Outlook Express etc). The best workaround I could find was to use a blank email in Outlook to compose Japanese text and then paste it into Word (or whatever). You may find that you have to manually change the font to something like MS Gothic or MS Mincho after pasting before it'll show up correctly but it does work. Windows 2000 and above (not sure about WinME) will allow Japanese input in any app, and lets you use Japanese characters in filenames.
