I was in an applestore today for the first time in awhile, and i noticed they had icons embedded in the wallpaper. for like Genius bar, and some other things.
i noticed that this would be an awesome thing for a Kiosk mode for my iMac during parties etc.
any idea what it is?

There was a thread about this (including the files) somewhere on the forums, but the search seems to be down again ( ), so I can't find it.

It's just a little app that runs, basically a launcher that sits at the desktop level, nothing exotic.

P.S. Windows: "wallpaper". Mac: "desktop picture".

Many people incorrectly call them "screensavers" too, regardless of the platform.

I personally like to call them "this is what anal people call desktop pictures but for the layman they are wallpaper images".

I believe what Apple uses is something they cooked up in-house. It's called something like DesktopButtons or somesuch.

I HATE that! Every day I have a new wallpaper on my windows computer at work and 5 people come by my desk and want to see my new screensaver. Where did they get that?

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Typical example of Windows' designers not getting concistency (sp? it's not in the cocoa dictionary) in the UI metaphors - since when do you put wallpaper on your desk?

Around the same time we started putting trash cans there I guess.

The desktop was never really a "desktop" but a "working space" or your own little office.
That includes wallpaper and trash cans.

And in some OS's Windows.

Windows XP:
Display Control Panel - Desktop Tab - Background: (then the list of files)

OS X: Context click on the desktop - Change Desktop Background...

Neither side seems to call it wallpaper, nor picture anymore.

Are they the same people who refer to the case all the computer guts are in as a hard drive?
