How feasable would it be to run get a copy of OS X Server and run it on an old iMac off my cable modem? I have a static IP and want to get my own email account set up on my own server because I am getting frustrated with .Mac and wanna stroke my nerd ego a bit by saying I run my own mail server

Anyone wanna debunk my idea or maybe give me some hints/suggestions?

Thanks!
Justin Williams

i used to run my own mail server from a 7200/90, running 7.5.5

still feel nerdy? well, do ya? punk?

there's no real call for X Server, just to run a mail server. just get sendmail to behave, and you can use normal X. and hey, if i can manage that too, then i'm sure you can

The hard stuff isn't in getting a working mail server running - that's easy, but in getting DNS, etc. setup properly.

In order to host your own mail server, you have to have your own domain, and be able to set the MX record for your domain to point to your IP address.

You then also have to make sure your ISP doesn't block incoming mail servers (something many of them do on residential accounts where running servers is not permitted in the terms of service).

If you can handle that part, you can probably handle the sendmail config easily enough.
