The Lens is a common failure point.
And yes, you can get the parts, or even have it done for you.

Check out this link for a bunch of Mod type stuff resellers and ratings. It's an Xbox site, but most resellers handle all consoles.

Yeah, it is usually the lens. Most of the time, my PS2 doesn't read CDs and sometimes it doesn't even read DVDs.

Something that has to do with the dust on the lense.

You could pick up a Refurb one for like 150 now.

You should try calling Sony. My PS2 fell off of a table and the CD drive got misaligned and they repaired it for free.

i know this guy at work who switched the serial number sticker on his busted ps2 with a new one and then returned the busted ps2. i dont really think thats an ethical thing to do but he did it.

The kids took it somewhere to see about being repaired and they said it couldnt. Dont know if it iwas such a savy place to take it. I will try calling sony.

The replacement parts are about $50, could sell it on ebay for about %50 and buy another one. $90 is too much, I will fix it myself for that if I go that route.

Thanks for the links.

Seems like every ps2 does this.

Mine had problems not long after I got it (But I had it in a REALLY REALLY dusty area).

I got it replaced no questions asked by just taking it back to the store.

My new ones in a less dusty spot (Can't even see any dust on it yet) and it's been fine since.

The PS2 I bought on launch day in October of 2000 is still going strong, but a second one I picked up in March of this year already refuses to read movies and games on DVD. Usually I think product protection plans are a huge waste of money, but I purchased one on the PS2 since it seems quite flaky.

Hello all -

One TopTip :

My ps2 started refusing to read games intermittently - it got worse and worse until it wouldn't load anything.

What worked for me was taking the casing apart, getting at the lens and swabbing it with surgical spirit. Left it dry for about five minutes and since then it's worked perfectly (touch wood...).

I'm an absolute technical imbecile, so if I can do it...

Mine works fine. I blow it out every once in a while with compressed air.

Are you wearing your safety glasses while you do this?

Yeah that's what I have been doing w/ mine since I got it back from Repair.

But I picked one up on Launch Day too, and within 4 months (out of their 3 months warranty period) it didn't read anything "Read Disc Error". So I bitch and bitch to Sony, they fixed it for free.

But now this one is having the same problem as well.

If it's out of warranty, take it apart (really easy) and use rubbing alcohol and Q-Tips to clean the CD/DVD lens. It will work fine after that. I have a launch PS2 that "Dies" once a month or so. A quick clean up and it runs like a champ again!

Couldn't you use one of those CD/DVD Lens Cleaner disc things rather than taking it apart? If the lens is just dirty, then that seems like the way to go. (Though a Q-Tip and Alcohol would be cheaper, and more fun.)

One question for people with PS2s that have 'broken'. Are you/Do you have smokers in the house? Just wondering if cigarette smoke might be the cause of this, because mine has worked fine.

Yeah, I tried that too. . . didn't work.

permanent68: Yeah, my dad smokes. You think that might be the problem?

I'm not sure. It might be. The PS2 has a little fan in it, and if you set it on the carpet, it might be just blowing all the ash/carbon right into the PS2. I do NOT smoke (well...cigarettes anyway, and any other substance I smoke is very infrequent), and my Ps2 has worked great for almost 2 years.

i was going to make fun of you about that one but it turns out it actually makes sense in some sort of way... maybe sony should put a little sticker on it that says "not compatible with cigarette smokers"... maybe that would cause less people to ruin the air
