Anyone have some recommendations for best blogging software in PHP?
I heard movabletype was good, but that costs money. I am looking for free.
I have also seen WordPress.
Any other ideas, or suggestions?

personal blog or are you going for something a lot bigger.
i have not played with wordpress all that much, so i can't help you there.
movabletype does have a free personal edition. 1 author, 3 blogs. my site runs off that free version of mt. i am using 2 of the 3 blogs (1 for news, and other for stuff. i could have done it all in 1 blog, but it is a little easier in two.
if you are not going to have more than one author i don't see why mt is not okay.

Is there a plugin/hack for WordPress that shows a user image of the poster (from a bunch of images of that poster) for each post, like in LiveJournal?

I have had good results with B2Evolution. Here is my blog. It is totally customizable, but I haven't done much to mine and am using a theme instead of making a new design for myself. Perhaps in the near future!

Other threads on this, if you search.
I like iBlog because it's pretty painless to use with .Mac. However, I do remember rumors that Apple might be coming up with some blogging software at MacWorld (hence, Wil Wheaton's appearance as a speaker since he's been pretty big on it).

If I remember correctly, there were plans for a blog server in Tiger Server (though not the Client version). I think it was supposed to be based on Blojsom, the Java clone of Blosxom. This news is old, and so it may have changed, but that was the general idea.
Personally, I'm a fan of Wordpress myself.
