Hi guys

Me and my eMac will be going dual screen in the next month or so... was wondering if you could turn the emac screen off to allow the full 32 mb vram to go to the external screen which will probably be a 19" tft hopefully.. cos as i understand it with the ibook, if u close the lid all 32 is going to the external screen.

hope u guys can help

thanks

Yeah, sorry. You can do the spanning hack to run both monitors at different resolutions, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to turn off the internal display. The only Mac that can do that is the PowerBook line, which you can run in "clamshell" mode. The iBooks can't do clamshell mode.

Uhhhhh......with the hack the iBook can run in clamshell mode (although not recommended for long periods of time).

Here's a link to Screen Spanning Doctor and supported machines:

Not sure if your eMac is supported, but thought I'd pass it along just in case.

It's not harsh, it's the truth. There isn't a single eMac where you can just turn off the internal display and use only the external. I think most of them support the spanning hack as well but don't quote me on that - it may only apply to the ones with a Radeon 7500 or Radeon 9200.

just like to give u all alittle up date

i have now gone dual screen and its great.. the emac really does need 64mb of vram to really get away with it but thats the price i gotta pay for being a cheap skate..

at the moment i'm running with an ugly 17" crt monitor that i've had for years and hopefully will be replacing with a 17"/19" tft.. any recommendations on a cheap one?

Also just another quicky.. is it best to have my emac (secondary monitor) at a lower resolution??

thanks again guys and please excuse the bad spelling it any

Darren, you might want to set up resolutions in such a way that the number of pixels per inch on each would be the same. That will prevent the windows you drag across two to change size and cursor jump vertically after crossing the border.

I run 19" at 1280x1024 and eMac at whatever gives me the closes scale and it is not the highest eMac resolution, whatever it is (I am on PB now).

Drag any finder window acros two at the same time and then adjust resolutions and monitors height/placement.
