A former executive from Mercedes has left Apple after just over one year of service, to join car producer Volkswagen. Johann Jungwrith, previously the research and development head for Mercedes in the United States, left his post as Director of Mac Systems Engineering at Apple for the role leading Volkswagen AG's new Digitalization Strategy Department, with the change in employment said to have taken place earlier this month.

According to a press release, Jungwirth joined Volkswagen on November 1, heading up the new department and reporting directly to CEO Matthias Müller. While Volkswagen's statement doesn't exactly explain what the role entails, Jungwirth's LinkedIn profile spotted by The Verge notes he will be working on over-the-air upgradeability, namely a system similar to Tesla's where updates to the vehicle's software can introduce new features using the already-present hardware.

At Apple, Jungwirth is said to have been "responsible for innovation in design and engineering in product development as well as hiring, growing, and leading a multicultural research and development team and supporting the Special Projects Group." His LinkedIn merely gives his Apple job title and that he was "focusing on building great Mac products." Considering his previous work for automobile producers, as well as the reported increase in car-related hiring at Apple, Jungwirth could have worked with Apple on Project Titan, the long-rumored Apple car.

That is either an incredibly smart move or incredibly bad timing.

Under the circumstances, I don't begrudge VW on this. They need a clean engineering head right now. As in, really, *really* need one.

That, or they could finger the executives (top-leval and mid-level) who were behind this, which is what everyone wants. Regulators might cut the fines in half if they could jail the top guys responsible.
