Is it ok to use Norton under OS 9 to optimise OSX? Or does it screw over the OSX files somehow?

Cheers Ry

Anyway, yes, it's OK to use Norton Speed Disk while booted from a CD (or another volume) under Mac OS 9 to defragment your disk. In my opinion, it's of limited benefit, but it will work. On the same note, it's ok to use disk repair utilities under OS 9 on Mac OS X disks. Just make sure you have the latest versions of the product you're using.

I would either get the current copy of Diskwarrior (which comes wih Alsoft's defrag utility) or wait unitl reviews of the new defrag portion of Drive 10 get reviewed. I have seen too many bad things come from speed disk. I myself had the thing bomb on me, leaving me rebooting to an icon of a folder torn in half! I took diskwarrior to get me back running again. I was using Norton 6.0.3 BTW....

You can use Norton Speed Disk, but-
1. Make sure it's version 6 or later.
2. Get one of the OS X Speed Disk profiles.
3. Be aware that if you have a power failure or any other crash while running SD, your drive will be seriously damaged.
Alsoft's PlusOptimizer (comes bundled with DiskWarrior) is a much safer alternative.
I agree that you should wait on Drive 10's defragger until some user reports are available.

I tried using DiskWarrior's disk optimizer on my OS X partition, but it gave me a message something like "This disk has special directories and cannot be optimized". I did boot from the DW CD.

The latest version of Speed Disk is 7.0.1r085. It is ESSENTIAL that before you do defragging with ANY utility that you make sure your drive doesn't have any problems...this means run Disk First Aid/Disk Utility, fsck, DiskWarrior, or similar, before you actually do the defrag. That said, Speed Disk should still be fine for your needs.

However, I still don't think it's all that necessary these days. Some people swear by it and insist it gives them much better performance...

I just picked up Norton Systemworks 2.0 a couple of weeks ago, and it seems to be doing its job well. No prob defragging with Speed Disk, and Disk Doctor has found several "Major Problems" with 'Catalog B-Tree', and fixed them.

However, there were some B-Tree's it said it couldn't fix, which came from a bad copy of Apple Works 6 that a friend gave me. I trashed Apple Works, and ended up having to re-install both OS' - and then I lost Stuffit 6.5 somehow! Also, in OS X, the "Installer" utility was damaged. But to upgrade from Aladdin's 6.5.1 download, I need to have 6.5, and it's not on my HD! I can't find the 6.5 version on Aladdin's site.

So, I can't open/install iTunes 3, SETI, or any recent programs that I might need to download.

Any ideas? HELP!!

Wait a few weeks for teh OSX Native version of DiskWarrior from Alsoft. If you were at Macworld NY, you could have bought eh current versionf ro liek 60$, (10$ off) and gotten a free upgrade as soon as teh OSX version comes out. Back then i think tehy said shipping in 3 weeks, or the third week in Aug., cant remember which. It looked so hot at teh show though, gonna be a sweet app.

Nice, thanks for your help. I think I'll flag it, didn't have the latest version of Speed Disk and don't particularly want to hose my HD. Will look into those other apps.

Cheers Ry
