Sorry if this is a dumb question and I am sure it is but I am about to go to a cable isp but althogh they support OS 9 I am wondering if I will be able to set it up myself with OS X.

I was able to do it with adsl.

In vino veritas.

I use X exclusively (except for UT <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ) and everything works fine with the cable modem. My ISP uses DHCP (I think most of them do actually) so all I had to do is:

1. Plug cable modem to the wall socket
2. Plug ethernet cable in cable modem
3. Plug power into cable modem
4. Open the system prefs, select network panel, chose DHCP, click apply button

That's it (ok, maybe you have to deactivate PPP connection and activate Ethernet for TCP/IP).

It works great and every Grandma can install it.

Ditto. I'm with NTL in the UK and my cable modem worked fine. They use DHCP and there was no problems.

DSL on the other hand......

Have done cable install (if it can even be said to amount to an 'install') via RoadRunner and Adelphia. No problem (once Adelphia got me a #^$%* modem that actually worked).

In contrast, with dial-ups, however... well, you don't want to hear about it. ( an IP issue, not a Mac issue)

A day without cable is like a day without OS X
