Where can I find some basic materials on developing GUI based X11 applications. Feel free to throw in book references and links?
A "hello world" example would be good enough at this point. Thanks!

No one really writes to X11. Instead, they write to XMotif, Athena, GTK, or Qt, and let those libraries do the primative drawings.
Motif example code is here:
http://www.soc.staffs.ac.uk/research...s/examples/Xm/
Al the Gnome and KDE stuff is open-source, so seeing that code is a given.

GTK+ or Qt are the most common ways to go. I'm sure you can find some sample code and docs on those sites

Also, if you go QT, you can easily compile the code to run on Windows or OS X. Neither of those are free, but as far as I'm aware, the code is identical.

Cool. Thanks for the tips. What can I do with Apple's X11 SDK? Do I necessarilly have to adopt one of the above frameworks or does it come with any of these?
I installed the SDK, and all I can tell is that it created a ton of header files. Furthermore, I can't find any documentation on how to code a "Hello World" and hence test the SDK.
Thanks!

Look for books on EBay. I'm always amazed at how cheap I can find them there with shipping & handling that's usually not any different that what you'll pay through Amazon or B&N. Just search on "programming QT" and "programming GTK". I'm sure something will come up for you...

A "Hello World" app takes quite a few lines of code in basic X11 code. If you download and compile qt, it will include examples that you can play with and look over.

Thanks, I'll be exploring Qt pretty soon. Yet another thing keeping me from cleaning the garage...
