Apple's website says that the original iPod's dock won't work with the mini but I remember reading somewhere that someone had some success with getting it to work. Does anyone know if this is the case or what will and won't work in this situation? I want to use my existing dock with a new Mini.

I tried putting my mini in my 3G iPod's dock, and the dock connector doesn't fit right and the mini doesn't even stand up. You might be able to get it to work with a mod, but there's no way it will even charge or sync as-is.

I believe it is the same dock with a different insert, to fit the smaller size - as is the case with the 15/20 and 40Gb models.
However, I don't think they sell the inserts separately.

Are your 3G docks for the thicker of the iPods, by any chance (the 30 or 40GB ones, I mean)?
Seems strange that some people have had (or said they had) success with getting the mini to work on their existing docks.
Thanks for the help!

My iPod minis seem to work perfectly in my 3G 30GB Dock.
They seem quite stable and the transfers, etc work fine.

The Mini does work with a dock. I use mine and my g/f's with my 3G iPod dock. Just use the belt clip that comes with the Mini and attach it -- upside down. It should be almost at the top, maybe a milimiter from the top.
If you do that, it'll fit into the dock and still be upright enough not to fall over and break the collection.
btw, my 3G iPod is a 40. The connection to the iPod and Mini is the same, it's just the depth of the dock itself that is greater.
