does MacBook work with cover closed?

Im setting up a MacBook for a friend. Ive never used laptops
will the macbook work with the cover closed?
it airport to wireless network and continues doing downloads
or does it just shut off?
are there setting to let me HD and wireless work with the cover closed? and pugged into the power with the adapter?

If an external display and keyboard are connected to the MB or the MBP, it will continue to run with the cover closed. The user guide that comes with the MB/MBP describes how to do this. I do not know if its possible to do this without an external display or keyboard.

to run the macbook (pro) while closed using an external display, you first close your macbook, then make sure the power is plugged in, then plug in the external display and external mouse, while the book is closed start to move and click the external mouse, once the display goes on...you could proceed to open your macbook to use the keyboard (unless you have an external keyboard as well) and the screen on the notebook will not go on until you unhook the display.

i have a MBP. this is how i do it.
1. turn on MBP
2. Plug in monitor
3. make sure the monitor display setting is on "mirror"
4. have external keyboard and/or mouse connected
5. close lid
6. press keyboard and/or mouse to awake MBP from sleep
*wait a few seconds....be patient*
7. The external display should show up, and you can change the resolutions to your liking
...if the external monitor outputs a blank blue screen....
8. unplug the DVI connector and replug it. this usually does the trick.

remember that closed lid mode will not work if the macbook pro is not connected to a power source.
