I just bought a used 30gb white ipod for $150. Which I thought was a good deal, but when I plugged it in to my computer it says its windows formatted.
So I am wondering if it is possible to re-format my ipod?

Just keep it Windows formatted. Much more useful in disk mode that way.

Attach the iPod, launch iTunes, select the iPod and chose Restore.

Ditto. Windows-formatted iPods are still compatible with Macs, and you can use them in Windows/Linux if necessary. There's NO reason to reformat it as HFS+.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

There is if you want to update the software.

Updating or restoring the iPod's OS on a Mac will necessarily make it Mac-formatted.

Seriously? I updated my old 4G windows-formatted iPod on my Mac for a while and it stayed Windows-formatted.

I've updated/restored probably a hundred of these things, and the Windows-formatted ones ALWAYS throw up the warning that they cannot be updated on a Mac.

Note: not sure about the shuffle.
