I paid my $8 (not a lot for such a great program), received my key and everything worked fine. Until I had to reboot. Then.......nothing. WeatherPop wouldn't even launch, much less tell me anything. So, I trashed every WeatherPop file I could find, downloaded the newest version and tried again. This time, I get rows and rows of question marks and not even an option to tap in my software key.

Anyone else have this problem? And what can I do to fix it?

Strange indeed... I've never seen anything like that before.

Have you asked Lisa (WeatherPop's creator) about it yet?
Her e-mail: <a href="mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">[email protected]</a>

I had this problem after installing perl 5.6.1 and a bunch of perl modules. I think weatherpop has some perl code that broke.

Ah, it's definitely something to do with perl.

Check your Console, cms, for something that may look like this:

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">2002-06-16 06:13:34.769 WeatherPop[5304] Bad returned data from /Applications/WeatherPop.app/Contents/Resources/weather.pl</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="1" face="Geneva, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif">Mine just failed to launch. Though, instead of closing, the process was still running but just didn't show in the menubar. I killed it manually, then re-launched it, and it opened and ran just fine. Strange. Very strange indeed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just checked my console and that's exactly what I found. I followed the same process as you and it's now running absolutely fine. Like you say: Strange. Very strange indeed.

Thanks, as ever, for your assistance.

my console reads:

2002-06-16 21:03:44.521 WeatherPop[27872] Vended com.glu.WeatherPop

2002-06-16 21:03:46.396 WeatherPop[27872] Error refreshing data: perl: warning: Setting locale failed.

perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:

LC_ALL = (unset),

LANG = "en_US"

are supported and installed on your system.

perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").

I tried setenv LANG "en_US" and checked that LC_ALL was unset but it still gives the same message...

One further (I hope not silly) question:

Is this likely to happen each time I reboot? And is there anything I can do to stop this groovy little app failing?

OS X takes long enough to start up as it is. Having to fiddle about with apps just to get them working at all is pretty annoying and time-wasting.

I emailed Lisa and referred her to this thread. Hopefully we'll get an answer soon

Thanks tinrib! I hope there's an easy fix to this.

BTW, I note that while you are now living in Melbourne, you originally hale from Bristol. I am from Bath originally and now live near London......by way of Hong Kong (13 years) and Singapore (5 years).

Small world, isn't it?!!! And really nice to "meet" someone from the West Country.

My Dad lives in Bath, originally in Camden Crescent but now he has switched to the other side of town and is living in Bear Flat. Lovely place but not enough life for me. I will be back in Bristol next year sometime - I love Bristol! (much more than London)

I wish WeatherPop could be movable in the menubar. That's the only thing I need before using it full time.

I really do wish developers would use the proper APIs for things like this. WeatherPop and NetMonitor would be ten times better, IMO, if they were true menu extras. They both feel funky and out of place when you actually try to interact with them rather than just look at them.
