iTunes is consistently removing track numbers, album names and artist names from my mp3s (along with others that bother me a lot less).

It only happens when:

1. I've ripped them from CD using my main user account (not an admin account).
2. I delete the references to the files from within iTunes and then add them back into the library again.

I can stop it stripping those tags by altering them in some way before step 2, though other tags will still be lost (year, genre etc.). My admin account doesn't have the same problem.

Has anyone else seen this, or have any ideas as to what might be the problem?

This is with the most up-to-date everything (iTunes, OS X etc.), BTW.

Thanks for any help!

Perhaps iTunes doesn't have write access to the files, so it's not adding the information to the files, but rather is storing the info elsewhere? Edit: nevermind, you said it keeps the info if you make changes to it before step 2.

I /have/ encountered instances where iTunes doesn't actually write the info to the files, so that if I move them to another computer or something it's not there.

When you say "though other tags will still be lost (year, genre etc.)", it sounds to me like iTunes is only writing v1 tags or something.

Thanks for the reply, Apfhex.

It's writing v2.2 according to Get Info.

How easy is it to shuffle all of my user data to a new account (with the same name as I currently use)? I'm assuming that might fix the problem since my admin account's fine.

Wondered why this didn't occur to me before. I trashed my prefs and all's well again. Odd - wonder why that made a difference. Those prefs were copied over from my old PB and had done me great service until now.

Anyway, all working properly again. Hooray!

It's doing 2.3 now. Isn't that the iTunes default? I understood that that was more widely supported than 2.4.
