a good 3 weeks ahead is good for decent pricing. I went to Germany during the high season for $820 USD direct thru Lufthansa. Best plane ride I ever had!! Where in the US you leaving from and going to end up in Germany?

I'd say Lufthasa as well - we use it at work; hence it's the cheapest way to get from Germany -> USA and back. (Frankfurt -> Dallas)

We flew Toronto ---> Hamburg ---> London ---> Toronto last month. Air Transat Club Class costs a little more than BA or Lufthansa economy but is much more comfortable. Wide leather seats with lots of leg room, champagne on check in, choice of meals served on proper plates, free bar. We used Ryanair for our connecting flight and apart from the bastards charging a fortune for extra luggage everything worked out well.
