I currently have a 15" Powerbook (1.5Ghz, Superdrive, etc...) that I use for surfing the internet, email, writing papers, listening to music, etc... No games or video editing or anything like that. I'm wondering why I shouldn't buy one of the new iBooks, sell my Powerbook and have a nice chunk of change leftover to help with school payments.
Pros of getting in iBook:
- Money
- Better wireless
- Better battery life
- Smaller
- I can get a free iPod mini (and sell it)
Pros of keeping Powerbook
- Sweet looking computer
- Better screen (this is probably the biggest factor)
- Faster
- Larger hard drive
- Superdrive (Although I've never used it to burn a DVD)
- Better resale value (?)
What do you think?

I currently have a Corvette (6L, Convertible, etc...) that I use for driving to school and grocery stores, listening to music, etc... No racing or anything like that. I'm wondering why I shouldn't buy one of the new Corollas, sell my Corvette and have a nice chunk of change leftover to help with school payments.
Pros of getting a Corolla:
- Money
- Better trunk capacity
- Better fuel economy
- Smaller
- I can get a free rear seat (and use it)
Pros of keeping the Corvette
- Sweet looking car
- Better handling (this is probably the biggest factor)
- Faster
- Larger engine
- Convertible (Although I've never figured out how to open it)
- Better resale value (?)
What do you think?

sounds like you've convinced yourself. switch to ibook, enjoy a new and certainly powerful enough for your purposes machine, and pocket the leftover cash.

ok. if you don't get an ibook we'll break your face.
oh, and powerbook updates are coming at an unknown time and potentially not until january.
ibooks are like buttah.
spend the extra money on a seperate display if you've got cash to burn. otherwise PM me and i'll give you a mailing address to send a check or money order.

I'm thinking about getting one too. The price is very nice with the airport and bluetooth standard now. I'll be putting my order in soon. Anyone know where the best place to order would be? I'm not a student, so I don't qualify for the discount, and other than upgrading the hard drive, I don't really see why I would need to buy from Apple. I might be better off somewhere I don't have to pay sales tax, plus they sometimes do free RAM, or printer or whatever.

Amazon has no sales tax in most states and often has a $100 mail-in rebate.

And you're running in spanning mode right? That's impressive. My new iBook should be arriving tomorrow. Someone buy my Powerbook!

No I'm not. I just tested it to see if it works, but I don't use spanning mode very often.

My fan hasn't gone on in over a week as well, and I've been doing some heavy Final Cut & LiveType work on it. It's an impressive machine for under $1000.

I did something similar to what the OP is considering a couple years ago. I had a rev. B PowerBook G4 that I sold to get an iBook G3. The reasons were the following:
1. The PowerBook G4 is too big to carry around
2. The PowerBook G4 is too fragile. Those were the titanium days, where the exterior chipped like crazy and the whole thing felt flimsy.
3. The iBook G3 by then was faster than my PowerBook, and I rarely if ever use apps that need AltiVec.
4. The PowerBook G4's Airport reception was absolutely horrible.
5. I got a nice chunk of change back.

Got my new iBook today. Added my 1GB stick of SDRAM from my old Powwerbook and I can't tell the difference in performance from my Powerbook (for my level of usage anyways). I'll be updating the iBook picture thread soon!

The iBook is the least expensive way to get a laptop with Mac OS X, the greatest desktop operating system ever created. 'Nuff said.
