I was just wondering if the 17" MBP have that problem, too.

I've seen couple of posts about this in this forum . Not sure how significant the problem is though.

Uh, I'll tell you when I get mine, but to my knowledge NOBODY has one to play with yet.

Oh, derr I didn't even think about when they would actually ship. I guess I'll just have to wait 5-7 buisiness days to bump this thread.

I would say it won't whine. Although it shares a lot of the same features as the 15-inch, the one thing that's completely different is the motherboard since it incorporates Firewire 800 and an additional, third USB 2.0 port.

I found the following comment by a member in another forum, but thought it would help you with your decision. It is no way meant to discourage you but if it is not that urgent perhaps you should wait for sometime before buying a one

I begged my daughter to go Mac for 2 years, she finally got a 15in. MacPro, what a piece of junk. She used it for 2 weeks, the right speaker doesn't work, when it does it is real low and you can hear static. It takes 3 or 4 tries to close the lid, it's warped from the heat I would guess. I will say one thing, we went to the Apple store last night, it was mobbed, I stated my complaints as calmly as I could. They were very understanding, but I told them my daughter just drove over 300 miles to get here and she wants her money back and not a replacement, the manager came over and took us aside and told us he understood, then talked her into a 17 in for no extra charge. I was more embarrassed than anything else always bragging how great my PB works. She told me she was sitting in class with the MacPro on and it was whining so loud everyone was looking at her. I just got a new PB 17 in, she wants to trade me, she doesn't want to take the chance of having problems. I tried to explain that every new OS will have problems and so will the MacPro's, it's a new thing too. I'm glad I got a new PB instead of a MacPro until everything is worked out.

I don't think anybody is making a decision here. I plan to get a small MBP if/when it comes out.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had the same 85W power circuitry, with the same whining inductors (my theory for the noise).

I could see that, but at the same time, I wonder if Apple has heard any of the complaining about the noise. If they have gotten alot of complaints, then I would imagine that they may take steps to fix things. I don't know. I guess time will tell.

Apparently, they are shipping. That would meant that now is the time for a bump.

Other reports both here and on other forums indicate no whining... Probably have to wait for more people to receive their machines before one can draw a conclusion.

Really need to wait a month to find out for sure. I know many people like me who didn't get a whine in the MacBook until it was about a month old.

I was just about to say that. when I first got my mac book pro I was in love and it was perfect. now I have sent it for repair and had everything from the whine (which was too loud to bear in class) to the deathed of the superdrive. now it is off for replacement and I forced to post from my cellphone. so um, if you can (and I understand sometimes you cant) I would wait.

VERY FAINT WHINE from the 17-inch. At least on mine. Only noticed in when the Power Adapter was plugged-in.

So you got your 17" MBP? Isn't it suppose to start shipping this week?

My mbp is still in the mail. I'll let you know on Thursday when it gets here.

I'm sure it works just fine though

That's weird. My 15" MBP 2.0GHz only whines when it's running on battery.
