Hard Disk Performace Profiling

I'm looking for an application that can profile hard disk performance. specifically can it tell me the data rates which are coming from the drive at any point.
can anyone suggest anything, preferably free.

I think MenuMeters does something like that, and you should be able to get extra info by clicking on the icon.

Uh, what about Activity Viewer (included with OS X)?

I think you mean Activity Monitor (at least, assuming you're using a more recent OSX version).

DOH, that's what I meant to say. 
But yeah, I think that will do the trick. The "Disk Activity" tab tells you Data in/out rates per second, gives you some graphs, reads, writes, etc.

thats exactly what i was looking for, its been a while since i used the Activity Monitor. usually use the terminal for a process listing, seems to have grown up more recently
