To reiterate - this monitor has the following ports: Port(s) Total (Free) / Connector Type: 15-pin D-sub / DVI-D / S-video / Composite / Component / 4 x USB 2.0
Will the ps3 plug into this? Will it support 1080p gaming/movies (its res is 1920 x 1200 so more than enough) If it does, surely thats the cheapest HDTV setup ever!?!? Screen £600 and PS3 £300 (ish) Ok I realise I can't watch broadcast HDTV on it, but blu-ray movies and games?

Nah, you can get HDTVs for a lot cheaper than that. 27-36" tube-style HDTVs are fairly reasonable, with the cheaper ones costing only about $300. The price goes WAY up as the size increases, but there are quite a few for around $1000, slightly less than the price of the Dell 24" LCD.
Now, the advantage to the Dell is that you can connect it to both the console and a computer. Same with the much cheaper 20" version. Judging by your sig, you probably don't need another computer monitor lying around, so maybe you'd be better off with an HDTV instead. HDTVs don't give you quite the sharpness and clarity you need for a computer monitor, but they're a lot bigger and better for console games, plus you can connect an HDTV tuner directly to them and use them in the living room.

Yeah, a 17" CRT or LCD can do at least 720p resolution (1280x720), and that's pretty damn good compared to a conventional 480i TV (640x480, interlaced).

Well, using only one display with the component IN on the dell you could play on it. Remember that the PS3 also has 2 HDMI outputs, both capable of independently driving a HDTV at 1080p. You could put 2 16:9 HDTV's next to each other, and play uber widescreen 32:9. Get 2 HDMI --> DVI adapters, and get 2 cheap 1080p capable LCD's and your good.Or... 2 of these to blow your head up when placed side by side. Yes, I know it's not a 1080p moniter, only 1080i. Biggest 1080p monitor I could find would be the Samsung 67 series.
But buying two $56,000 HDTV's strictly for PS3 is just fun.

If you try to hook up a PS3 to an LCD via DVI, make sure the LCD will accept 1080p over DVI. even if the resolution is high enough, it may not support displaying it. Of course, this is all speculation based on current hardware; who knows what will be the norm in a year.
