Like a number of you on this forum, my new MacBook Pro is suffering from the "whine" issue. I've started a petition to encourage Apple to acknowledge and fix this problem: http://www.petitiononline.com/whinefix/petition.html

Please consider signing, and spread the word. Thanks!

Isn't the "fix" of opening PhotoBooth or the mirror widget just preventing the CPU from falling into the deeper sleep states, and thus shortening battery life by using more power?

I'd hate to have that enabled permanently.

Yup, that's no "fix" at all. Apple needs to come up with something long-term workable, and soon!

The problem is that it's not happening with all MBPs, which complicates the diagnosis of the root cause. There's no way of knowing the percentage of MBPs that are exhibiting the whine because it's mostly the people having the whine that are posting. Mine does not exhibit the whine.

I'm tempted to start a "Stop the Macbook Pro Whiners" petition.

I guess you just expect less for your $2000.00 purchase.

why do people start these pointless petitions...and then come here and start yet another thread about this 'whine' (that I do not hear from my MacBook)...enough already......if you want to waste your time with a stupid petition go ahead but there is no need for more "whine" threads around here.

I haven't heard this whine and I have been at the Apple stores looking at the MBP but then again the Apple stores are noisy. Most likely Apple is not trying to ignore this issue but it's probably difficult to figure out the issue since they are still trying to fill orders for this machine and it's maybe hard to tell if it's the processor or a software issue.
Starting a petition doesn't hurt however it's too early to start something like that. The MBP has only been out for about a month and people are acting like Apple hasn't made any effort to work on this. Apple has to have a few of these at their headquarters with this issue, it's not just the customers with problem machines.
One note, it's all of your choice to be the first on the block with something new. I have been like that with Apple and Sony and almost every time I have gotten a lemon.

I went to the apple store and was told that I needed to run photobooth permanently and that they didn't expect a fix for it and it was normal. I explained to the manager that there is no way in hell someone asking you to turn off your laptop because the "high pitch noise is disruptive to the rest of class" when 3 other students are using their, fans blairing PCs next to me and she has never said anything about there computers. I said if you won't take it back I'll do a chargeback through amex. As soon as I said chargeback they offered to exchange it, and I am quite happy with my 20" non whiney Imac, at least until the figure this stuff out.

(my added emphasis)

I guess that's the point. If you had the whine, maybe you'd be a little more tolerant of the 'whiners'.

Have Apple made an announcement about this problem or have I missed something?
