when i enter system preferences and go to the audio tab under output there is no built in audio selection, only a DIGITIAL OUT.

try plugging something (headphones) into the headphone jack, or in & out a few times...
sounds (pun intended!) like the jack is trying to send digital output (and not going to the internal speakers).
in fact, see if the headphones are getting audio...

Or just look into the port and see if it's glowing red. If it is then your audio jack is "stuck" on optical output, and a logic board will fix it.

A PRAM reset might be a slightly cheaper option.
