loginwindow crashing - can't log in

I installed Messages beta which required a reboot. Subsequently I can no longer log in with my user account. After entering my password, the screen flashes gray as usual but then goes right back to the login window. I can log in as any other user on the system just fine. Console log shows that loginwindow is crashing when I attempt to login as myself. Uninstalling Messages had no effect. I tried renaming the com.apple.loginwindow.plist file but that didn't do anything either. As a matter of fact, loginwindow appears to have crashed before recreating the plist file.

I really don't want to have to create a new user account and start all over. That sounds way to painful. I sure trying to assign a new account to my existing iCloud and associating my old home folder with the new account would be a mess.

And what's the deal with Time Machine. I'm logged in under a relatively new account I called 'Admin'. If I go into Time Machine, it won't let me restore files to my other user account. Is that by design? How can I override that behavior?

I figure I'll try restoring my entire ~/Library folder to see if that makes a difference with the loginwindow crash.

I gave up on Time Machine. From a terminal window I used 'su -l' to switch to my original user account. I then used 'cp -p -R' to copy the Library folder from my time machine drive to my original users home folder. I was then able to successfully log in under my user account however I got a zillion error messages. Seems I wasn't able to write to the Library folder even though the permissions appeared correct. I owned all of the files and folders and had rwx permissions. Via Finder I did a Get Info on the Library folder and granted myself ownership of the Library folder and that seems to have fixed the permissions. Just to test it out, I logged out of my account and attempted to login again. No luck. loginwindow crashing again. I'm stumped. This is really pissing me off.

I'd try a few more things then create a new user account and move on. Sucks to have to do this but thankfully you have a backup so worst case scenario you're out some customizations and time.

You could try this. note: might want to create a backup of your (non-functional) user account first.

Stop Time Machine doing updates. Go into the TM volume and delete all snapshots after the problem surfaced.

Delete your user account from the Accounts prefpane.

Launch Migration Assistant. Let it find your TM volume, and import your user account from before the problem.

Persistence paid off. I tried again to copy my home folder from my TM backup. Something is definitely odd because when I do an 'ls -l' I see that all of the files and folders are owned by me and I've got rwx or rw- access as expected. However, I will receive permissions errors if I attempt to create a new file in a folder or edit an save a file. I had to do a Get Info from Finder on my home folder and give myself read/write permissions as well as change ownership to myself (even though it already appeared as though I had access). I reviewed my login items in the Users & Groups pref pane and got rid of some obsolete items and pared it down to just the necessities.

I've still got no idea what went wrong in the first place. Thanks for your suggestions everyone.
