I just did it. What is interesting is that the update bar is the same as it used to be in OS 9! Talk about old school.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

let us know if the fan behavior changes...

Nothing different so far. My G5 has never had any real issues anyway. This is a 1.6 G5 with 1.25 GB ram.

Did Firmware upgrade an hour ago without problems. No noticeable change in fan behaviour or sound (but my G5 tucked away under the desk) but ThermographX shows the drive bay temp 9 degF cooler since the update.

I've got a dual 2.0, but since I'm on vacation for the next two weeks and away from my G5, I guess I'll be spared any heartache if the firmware update goes bad.

Things went fine here. Nothing new to report.

I am up and running.

The fans do seem more elegant when speeding up and slowing down.

Just my $.02

Say the hell what? Elegant?

Anywho, it does not fix the chirping sound.

You're doing a great job with the English language. I hope you're able to master it one day...

When the CPU is being taxed the fans gradually speed up, there's less of a revving than there was before the firmware update was applied. Hence, the fans sound more elegant.

(You mileage may vary. My G5 had the 5.02 firmware prior to the update.)

If you are planning to put G6 upgrade in this tower in the future don't apply this firmware

I ran the firmware update, but after it was finished and restarted, I got a message that my G5 was already updated.

I have a 1.8 dually

I just applied the firmware update to my single 1.8 G5. So far no problems. Can't say I notice anything different; boot time may be a little faster.

As a recent "switcher" I do have to say I am very impressed by this firmware update process. In the PC world this same firmware update would have meant me checking the motherboard manufacturer's web page for a BIOS update, then goofing around installing the bios update from a DOS boot diskette... and after all that reconfiguring all my BIOS settings. The MAC way of handling this process is certainly better.

My 1.6 upgraded with no issues. Bootup seems a little faster, fan noise seems to be the same as before...

That may be the case if you're using an older PC, but newer PC motherboards don't require that you boot from a floppy to install a BIOS update.

After the update Dreamweaver would automatically quit after opening a file but a quick prefs delete fixed that so I don't think the two are related.

Otherwise, like others, no noticeable problems with the update. Boot-up does seem a little faster.

I have a Dual 1.8GHz and Software Update downloaded and I installed the new Firmware.

It supposedly installed successfully.

I have had the machine lock up after I have left it unattended for a few hours two or tree times already.

Anyone else experience strange behavior?

I do not let the computer go to sleep ... anyone else leaving their G5s awake should notice the same if it is not solely my machine.

Mine caught fire and exploded.

No, no, seriously, I mean seriously here...

I can't tell no difference but it did wake from a deep sleep kind of funny today.

It fired up like normal, then kind of acted like it was shutting down for a reboot, than then a blink and everything was fine, it was up.

Kinda odd. Not too odd, but kinda odd.

So, far it's just that one occurance, we'll have to see if this is a new feature. As far as fan behavior, can't really tell a difference.

Installed it on my G5 Dual 2.0 last night and have nothing interesting to report except that, after holding down to power button to get the long tone, the CD tray ejected. No apparent reason, it just popped open. Then, when the machine booted up again, it closed and everything went normally.

Weird, huh?

After updating last nite my Apple Cinema Display did not turn on. My G5 sounded like it started up normally. After some frantic moments I unplugged the Monitor's power supply and everything was working normally after plugging back in.Did the update do something to the video card ? I have the ATI 9600. Anybody had a similar problem?

Did update, thought the tone was cool, thought booting was more rapid, haven't noticed any difference in fan behavior (hadn't noticed anything strange before though).

I've had the no-video-on-wake-from-deep-sleep problem so I thought I'd test it. Put the G5 to sleep overnight and woke up with no problem - maybe this fixed it.

I still hear the occasional chirp but they seem more subdued than before. Only time will tell.

Okay... I'm going to sound really dumb but I can't help it.

Software Update downloaded the firmware upgrade (along with some other things). When I came back to my computer it said all was fine and dandy and asked me to shutdown or restart. So I restarted... and it booted up like usual. I thought it would have to go through an extra phase to update the firmware? How can I check what version I have? In System Profiler my Boot ROM version is 5.07F0.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As you installed some other things at the same time, it appears that the Firmware update application wasn't launched by Software Update (probably due to the need for the other udpates to restart your machine).

Simply go into /Applications/Utilities and launch Power Mac G5 Firmware Updater 5.1.4. Some instructions on how to do the update are displayed.

When the update is completed successfully, a message will inform you upon login, and your Boot ROM version should show up 5.14f0.

Dual-2GHz with 2.5GB RAM, everything else stock. Applied the firmware the day it was released, havent had any problems. Startup (from button to Login Window) has dropped from 57 seconds from 45 seconds; no other noticeable differences.

If you have a chirping sound, it is a result of electromagnetic interference that is resonating at just the right frequency to cause something in your computer (often the speaker) to move and thus generate noise.

Open up the machine and see that it is properly shielded, and that nothing has become loose enough to vibrate and cause the noise.

Good question. I didn't see any mention of RAM timing updates in the Firmware description, but if you try them, please report back.
