I own a G4 iBook and it has developed a fault I have never seen before. When you turn the computer on, it gets to the Apple logo, and after a few seconds the screen goes all grey coloured a message says "You need to restart your computer" in about 5 different languages.

So I do this, and the message keeps coming up. I cannot get past this error.

I booted into the Installer using my DVD software, and tried out the Disc Utility and it said the disc could not be read. It's possible the HDD has failed I guess, and it is the 2nd one in the machine since I have had it, which is three years now.

Any ideas why this message comes up, and how I could fix it? Or does it sound like my iBook is dead?

Thanks in advance!

Try to disconnect any third party hardware/remove additional memory. If you still get a kernel panic, try to reinstall the iBook. If it still fails after this, it's a hardware problem.
