LaCie has released a freeware backup utility call SilverKeeper.
I'm downloading it now and I'll report back when I've tested it out...
You can find it here: http://www.silverkeeper.com/

I thought about downloading it, but then I read the release notes...it doesn't support automated (scheduled) backups. For me, that makes it useless. I'll probably pay $20 and get the Retrospect upgrade, as the preview worked pretty well.

The 'readme' for SilverKeeper says it uses 'Finder copy' for backup. Don't expect a bootable partition if you backup your main drive to an external drive. If I'm wrong, be sure to report back.

No, it's not great for people that need to backup every day or anything, but for people that only need to backup their system every week or month, that's fine...
I wonder if you can make a script that would launch it etc...

From the site:
Due to implementation limitations, automatic backup on a schedule or at shutdown is not available under OS X (OS 10.1.2 or later). These options are "grayed out" in the Tab Window. You must manually click the Go button to perform a Backup. This can also be activated with an AppleScript event. LaCie will enable scheduling capability in a future release.
So it's there, you just have to work with it a little...

i had been concerned by the fact that the lacie website had no info on this. (its not too hard to write an app and put somebody else's logo on it... i've had that happen to me before.) so i emailed lacie yesterday and asked them about it. here's their reply:
Thank you for your inquiry.
SilverKeeper is authentic LaCie software. We decided to create
a separate site for SilverKeeper because we were anticipating
a high amount of traffic.
We will be adding information to www.lacie.com very soon.
Sincerely,
Kristen Weidner-Nguyen
