Heh, OmniWeb 5.0, iTunes and Mail menu plug ins are fake. They were made in photoshop. But it'd be nice to have them as real menu plug ins. I originally made them to give developers some ideas but my mischief side want to play a little trick on all of you.. sorry about that

Brass, you can remove menu plug ins by hold CMD and drag the icon out. It will poof!

A very good joke by Adam. When i saw the picture i actually believed that an early alpha of OW5 was released, so i run to the OmniWeb thread in the software forum and then realized the truth

Anyway, i think it would be great to have new menu items from Apple like those Adam mocked (iTunes and Mail status). I expect that sort of goodies in 10.2

I can't seem to re-arrange the order of my menu items other than the system ones either. They just appear in the order the apps are loaded.

from left I have netmonitor, weatherpop, cee pee you cpu monitor from unsanity (thanks zerologic) and the stock apple icons. The clock is PTHclock, I was using wClock before and actually liked it better, but it will not let you set the position, so it will go over existing icons, so you have to move around it rather then it moving around what is already there.

Going along with the picture worth a thousand words thing:


I use ambar which is what's taking up most of the space, it's a fast way to quit/hide apps and since my dock is so packed its good for seeing whats running too. It also lets me control itunes and check what's playing among other things.

Also trying See Pee You from Unsanity, that's the simple numerical cpu monitor up there. I guess my Stuffit Menu isn't showing because the finder isn't frontmost and the document icon is just what I replaced Classic Menu's graphics with.

I'm having a problem. My menu bar is supposed to look like this:



However quite often I look up there and see it looking like this:



with WeatherPop and Net Monitor moved all the way to the right. I have to quit them both and relaunch them to get back to where they're supposed to be. Does anyone know why this happens? It's quite annoying.

EDIT: First to fix the image tags (I guess they don't like spaces) and second because I can't tell my right from my left.

It's called the Magic Menu. Just activate it in the Stuffit Deluxe prefs, and it should appear in your menubar.

Anybody ever think about the idea of adding another menu bar at the bottom of the screen?

It could be used to display small icons of open apps such as taskmenubar (and I think, ambar) does. You can also select an app by single clicking or select an app and hide all others by double clicking in taskmenubar.

There would be lots of room to add other cool apps as were noted in this thread.

Another option would be to double the size of the top menubar leaving the top half of it for ultilities and the bottom half as is.

I think either of these would make using your computer much easier. Plus, you could hide (and even not use) the dock which would free up screen space.



Anybody have the link to the ambar application noted in this thread?

A control strip would be nice but I would much prefer a menubar at the bottom that does not get in the way of windows of open apps. A control strip gets in the way as does the dock. I know the dock and control strips can be hidden but then you have to do extra work to activate and view whats in them. With a dedicated menubar at the bottom (or doubling the top one), you can just glance quickly at it to see what's going on and it would not get in the way of your app windows.

I didn't know there were all these cool things already for the menubar. It seems to me that somebody, maybe even Apple, is going to see that making more use of the menubar and maybe even adding one at the bottom is much easier to use and cleaner looking than either a control strip or dock.

Do a search on VersionTracker for "menu bar" and you'll find most of the little goodies people are showing off here. I had no idea there was so much good stuff to put in the menu bar until this thread.

For all the scores of Menu extras out there, the one I really miss from my OS 9 days is one that does what TaskMenuBar did.

Namely:

Put up the icons of all running apps in sequential order.

Allow me to switch apps with one click.

Allow me to switch and hide the rest with an option click.

Allow me to quit from those apps with a click and hold (and select from the menu).

I can do much of this with the dock, but because dock items aren't grouped it always takes too much hunting... I prefer my launcher and my process apps separated.

I can also do much of this with drag thing, but because drag thing doesn't go up in the menu bar it is always getting in the way of something.

Anyway I miss this ability.

WeatherPop has been known to suck CPU cycles when it is in a bad mood. My father was complaining about OS X all of a sudden slowing down.
I stopped at his house and he showed me and sure enough, it was slow. A quick top session in terminal showed the culprit, WeatherPop sucking up 80% cpu trying to update the stats in the menu bar.

If you look at the dates, you'll find that this thread is actually quite old. When it was originally posted, Meteorologist did not yet exist. At the time, WeatherPop was also free.

In fact, if I remember correctly, Meteorologist was created in response to WeatherPop's going shareware.

I prefer WeatherMenu to both WeatherPop and Meteorologist, but not many people know about it. The icons are more vibrant and professional-looking, etc.
