I can't seem to set any sort of desktop picture while using spaces. Am I alone?

Yes he does and no you can't.
It would be nice to be able to do it though.

I can't really get around Spaces and how it might benefit my workflow - but I'm willing to be educated. How do people actually use it in practice? When I tried it (briefly) it seems like you can only run one application in one 'space'. I had thought I might have a new space for each project I work on; but each one needs a spreadsheet, a word processing document, some statistics program etc., so I would need to run the same app in multiple spaces which does not seem possible.
So, please let me know how Spaces changed your life...

I have assigned some apps (my primary `work apps', e. g. TextMate and Skim) to one work space, and background apps such as Mail, Webkit (Safari) to the other. This way I can distinguish between `real work' and administration/fun. Adium is always present on both spaces, most other apps open on either space as well.
I've tried having four spaces, but two are definitely easier to use for me. And I don't need to remember which space I'm in, if an app that has been launched isn't there, it's in the `other space'

I would just be happy if I could change them at all. If all spaces are using the same desktop picture, can it be something other than the default space scene?

And if you use the keys to switch between spaces, its easy to act like you're being productive.

You can have different windows of the same application in different spaces. Just drag the window into the space where you want it to be.

12 spaces here.
4 down, 3 across.
My favorite is #1, to which no app is assigned in the event that I just need free space (sort of like sweeping everything off my desk in one stroke, but without the consequences).

Also, I concur in that you should be able to assign a different desktop pic to each space... or even a supplemental pic on top of your main one that spans all spaces.
And when will our desktop pics be seen when you "expose" Spaces?
I think the best improvement, tough, would be the ability to NAME YOUR SPACES.

Since I've seen this request in multiple threads AND have wanted this feature myself, I put in a feedback request on Apple's support site.
Spaces could REALLY use some way to differentiate each Space a bit better, and I'm sure that alone would make me want to use it a heck of a lot more often.

I like spaces a lot, I have 4: 1 is mail, taskpaper and occasional other stuff, 2 is aperture, 3 is safari/adium/ijournal & other browse type stuff, 4 is itunes. I like not having to have everything iconised, I can just switch rapidly between spaces without having to close stuff down and it keeps everything neat and organised.

Call me weird, but I have never liked virtual desktops or virtual spaces before Leopard. I never thought that they functioned properly. Now with Leopard, I enjoy using spaces. I have 4 spaces.
1) Safari, other apps
2) iPhoto
3) Random
4) iMovie and other apps
Naturally, I have Adium and some other apps in all 4 spaces.

4 spaces here:
1. Email apps
2. iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, & Address Book
3. Safari & Snak
4. ProApps, Numbers
iChat is set to appear in every space.
One cool little trick is combining Expose's All Windows function with Spaces. Activate Spaces to bring up the tile view, then press the All Windows Expose key to expose all open windows in each space simultaneously.

1: Music production
2: daily office - Address Book, Mail, iCal, Stickies
3: Music utilities
4: private - Safari and whatever else.
Finder is set to travel through all spaces.
The neat thing is that when you have fifteen or so windows open, you only actually see the ones you're working on when you hit Exposé.

Nope, I have been using macs since the Mac Plus! I can change the desktop picture but when I shutdown or reboot, it goes back to default. If I turn spaces off, everything works fine.

In my opinion, Spaces is my favorite feature in Leopard. I am use to being in the linux environment and having multiple desktops. So I take full advantage of doing a lot of things at once while having a clutter free environment. I do like having different wallpapers for each desktop in linux, as it could easily distinguish from others. I'm still fine with not having that feature in Spaces.
--------
My Setup: [6 Spaces]
1: Safari and other browsers
2: Dreamweaver, BBedit
3: Adium
4: itunes
5: Limewire, Transmission
6: Toast
Finder is set to run on all Spaces

That's a new one on me. So you're saying: if you set any desktop with Spaces off... when you
later turn on Spaces (and restart?)... the "/System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg"
file, also located at: "/Library/Desktop Pictures/Nature/Aurora.jpg" will replace your setting?
Weird.
Try trashing some appropriate plists and caches, mebbe.
[main cache folder would be ~/Library/Caches/Desktop,
but, perhaps toss com.apple.preferencepanes.cache too.
Plists would include com.apple.systempreferences and
com.apple.desktop.plist, I guess.]
Almost hate to ask... have you repaired permissions?
