I'm actually back to working now, so I'm forcing myself to bed early tonight.

I'm house-sitting for my friends until next Tuesday, my 360 will be there and I expect to play quite a bit.

New Modern Warfare 2 footage captures the life of a flag runner

They had to put this guy on the better team, because he rapes nearly everyone.

Also, let's hear it for host migration. Hope EPIC is taking notes.

Mad Catz's Modern Warfare 2 Controllers Look Downright Badass - Modern warfare 2 - Gizmodo

I'm loving the idea of the buttons on the back of the controller, a definite buy for me.

Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Hands-On Impressions: No Buzzkills - Call of duty: modern warfare 2 - Kotaku

Playing as a Riot Control class offered an exciting new gameplay tactic—being a distraction. There's a Challenge reward for doing so, one called Crowd Control, that one can receive for being a bullet sponge while sporting the Blast Shield. What's not as much fun is when an enemy takes you out by shooting your shins and feet into oblivion, an area unprotected by the shield while standing and running.

Plus, as Riot Control, you dual-wield right away.

We didn't get much of an opportunity to muck with the Create A Class option, but did quickly customize a pair of classes with what was already unlocked. I'm not sure if this is good news or bad, but Infinity Ward is being extremely generous with the load out options. The developer has broken the "rule" that secondary weapon means pistol. Players can choose an assault rifle for their primary weapon, a rocket launcher for their secondary. Or a machine pistol. Or a shotgun. Whatever. Expect chaos.

Better players than me got to take advantage of some of the new Killstreak rewards. Most of what we saw tonight—UAV, AC-130 gunship, sentry guns, Predator missiles—we'd heard mention of before or had seen in Call of Duty 4. But what's nice about the Killstreak after the UAV, known as the Care Package, is its randomness. You may get ammo. You may get to step into the AC-130 and rain death on your enemies. It's designed to give the player who might not ever have an 11-kill long streak a chance to experience doing so. (But watch out, because anyone can grab your Care Package after it's been airdropped.)

On the flip side of Killstreaks are Deathstreaks. They don't reward the better player, they help to level the playing field for the less skilled player. Two were shown tonight. Copycat lets the player on the losing end of a streak inherit his killer's class and weapons load out—even if the player receiving the Deathstreak bonus hasn't yet unlocked those guns—for one life only. The other is Painkiller. It's much simpler, offering the less skilled player a short period of increased health.

Something tells me removing the secondary weapon as a pistol rule is going to really kill some of the experience. As for deathstreaks, they sound kinda lame.

Probably done to make the game slightly more accessible to new players. I don't know if you've noticed but starting late in the Call of Duty matchmaking community is not easy in any way, shape or form.

I really like the idea of the random killstreak 'perk' but I still look forward to hearing "Enemy UAV is online" about a hundred thousand times.

Meh, if we're talking about the double weapons, I think it makes it less accessible, because the veterans will really know how to cover their asses with weapon combos (Like when I used the RPD, it was a monster, but it was a real bitch to get any kind of accuracy, no subtlety, and the reload was atrocious).

Yeah, I'd appreciate it they reduced announce to only activations (like ignoring when some other dude activates it 5 seconds into another guys). It'd also be handy if they stacked them, rather than overlap (so long as the player is still on the same life, perhaps).

But it never bugged me much, honestly.

I think the two-primaries thing is probably just because the pistol is so useless in most multiplayer games. How often do you get pistoled to death by somebody who isn't making a last stand (or even by somebody who is)? So rather than force you to have a useless secondary, everybody gets a real gun.

I do like the idea of a deathstreak, too. This is probably the least noob-friendly game on the Xbox, so if it helps them to stick in there and learn, that's a good thing.

I thought holding out the Desert Eagle until level 45 was what made the pistol so useless. I mean, sure it's way more powerful, but its also the only gun you can't silence. As a sniper, things improved significantly when I knew someone was coming for me and I had a Deagle to splatter their brains on the wall rather than a silenced .45 to tickle them with while they sprayed the room.

Honestly, I'd rather they just made the two-weapon perk available earlier, and perhaps move it to tier 1 because its overwhelmed by better options at tier 2*

*speaking without having seen the new tiers and their perks.

I'd also add that if you want to make things newb friendly, the game could benefit from some segregated playlists for maybe levels 1-25 (non-prestige).

Interview: Modern Warfare 2's Vince Zampella

What about something like the Zombie Mode that Treyarch did for World at War?

[Silence.]

It's too bad our audio recorder doesn't record the sound of eyes rolling.

That's why I did it! [Laughs.]
G-I-M-M-I-C-K

Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer interview by Giant Bomb

It will be your choice how to set up your own kill streak awards. You're free to choose three of your liking, whether these are the first three (short kill streaks, 3 / 4 / 5 kills) or three high ranking kill streaks (for the pros, 9, 11, up to 15 kill streaks).

3 kill streak — UAV
Team Radar for a limited time span
4 kill streak — Care Package
This supply drop will pick a random kill streak, from Predator Missile (likely) up to a AC-130 (less likely)
4 kill streak — Counter UAV
UAV scrambler/jammer
5 kill streak — Sentry Gun
Automated machine gun that you can drop at strategic points. It's an extra (stationary) teammate that will not miss!
5 kill streak — Predator Missile
User controlled missile to pin-point impact point.
6 kill streak — Precision Air strike
Not yet seen in action but the name give us a slight clue... Pin-point an air strike...?
7 kill streak — Attack Helicopter
Call in a helicopter that has turrets to take your enemy down, might be user controlled but it's not confirmed.
9 kill streak — Pave Low
Another heavily armored assault helicopter, shoots rockets and may be user controlled. Again, user controlled is not confirmed.
11 kill streak — AC-130
Plane that shoots a 25mm turret, 40mm canon and the killer 105mm canon. Seen in action in this video: AC-130 Kill streak
15 kill streak — unknown
I didn't realize we were still limited to only three. Not sure how I feel about that. I'd have preferred maybe the regular three and a bonus of your choosing. Maybe they'll have a perk like that. Either way, looks like sek can look forard to "The enemy UAV is online!" and "The enemy UAV has been jammed!" (Though frequency will probably be reduced thanks to the customizable perks. I can't wait til there are games where no one as UAV recon and everyone bitches about it (Sentry gun sounds very TF2, though probably much slower/weaker).

I forgot to mention the new accolades system, which is sort of like GoldenEye awards. Sometimes I'm confused why you don't see this more often as awards are always welcome (As well as busts like Lemming Award).

None Spared- Killed entire enemy team.
Switchblade- Most knife kills.
Grudge Match- Most kills of same player.
AR Specialist- Most assault rifle kills
Lockdown- Most time spent in one place
Defuser- Most bombs defused
Rescuer- Most Rescues
Fragger- Most frag grenade kills
Stunner- Most stun grenade hits
Lock and Load- Most reloads
Pathfinder - Most UAV's
Vengeful- Most paybacks
Sprayer- Most hipfire kills

If you can use an AC-130, then the maps need to be much bigger. From what I remember of the AC-130 mission in CoD4, you got a pretty fookin large map to fly about on.

I'd expect it to be about as good as a level 1 sentry, which is pretty great as long as you can get the drop on people.

It'll be damned handy for Snipers.

Even for Hardcore TDM or HQ it'll be good. Wonder if you can destroy it though.

If you'll (Dakar) accept me, I quite fancy a couple of games against you. You're on the East coast of the US aren't you?

1 v 1 has never been my strong suit, particularly against someone with 13 days more CoD4 experience than me. I may give it a go, though we may have to negotiate the terms.

Uh, why me, anyway? I'm certainly not the best at this game, never claimed so, either.

---

Interesting thing I learned this weekend -- apparently my weapon of choice (the M16) is considered the noob choice (because its really good at getting kills). Figures, the thing is a fantastic long/short weapon. Still, I spent most of the weekend trying to work out a new class. Some combo of an M4 with a Sniper... though I can't decide whether I should go ACOG with it (The idea is to pull it out when I know some guys are out of range). Honestly, its irritatingly map dependent, which brings up the fact that apparently they're still only giving us 5 custom classes in 2.

---

Uh, back to this weekend, I did have a few amazing games. Opened up one on a 14 kill streak (Finished 21 and 2), ended another one a very high streak (always frustrating when you end a game on a live high streak). Saw some dude with 42 and 4 at one point on another game (he finished 56 and 9).

Using the M4 I got some frantic gameplay, which the M16 doesn't quite promote with its burst fire. The weekend culminated in a crazy scene on Ambush where I spotted a guy, so I emerged from cover and made towards him, all the while laying into him – only to see another guy behind him and to the left once I had gone too far. I start strafing to my left to down him too, when I spot guy #3 emerging from my right. I lay him out too as 4 shows up... and my clip dries up. Ducking left for into thin cover (4 still ha an angle if he wants it) instead of reloading I switch to my full-scope M21 and just blaze up the guy as fast as I can (while scoped) for the quad kill. By far the luckiest/hardest most skilled/most satisfying moment I've ever had in this game. I only wish they could have seen what I did to them as a group. Also, a theater mode.

---

I think I spotted chuckit playing at some point this weekend, though not at a point where I was available to join him. chuckit, have you succumbed to curiosity thanks to the hype of this game? Initial impressions?

---

Final though: With all the talk of noob weapons and perks I offer this prediction: The increased melee range perk in MW2 will be the next vilified perk.

I'd actually played it a while back when it was fairly new. I didn't like it very much at the time, because it seemed like everybody and their dog was a ****ing sniper, so most of the game was spent cowering in a corner knowing that if I stuck my head out anywhere it would be immediately blown off.

But since MW2 is coming out, I decided to give this one another try to see if my opinion has changed. I don't know if everybody realized how boring all-sniper games are or what, but I did see more people actually fighting and found it more enjoyable. But I still made a UAV-jamming shotgun class and snuck around assassinating enemy snipers.

I didn't snipe much this weekend, mostly because the maps didn't come up and it felt like when I was the hit-detection was off or I wasn't doing damage... but I won't lie: Sometimes I have superhuman patience, and I get an odd type of enjoyment out of a battle of patience that some sniper battles are.

I don't know what game modes you're playing, but snipers are slightly less prevalent in Headquarters. of course, they're also twice as annoying when there happens to be one.

Edit: I think the short version is "I'm a camper."

Edit 2: The big thing I tried this weekend was stabbing the **** out of everyone.

Interview: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer designer Todd Alderman

So you can't use the shield and a smaller secondary weapon like a pistol at the same time?

You can swap to another weapon. But while you have the shield out, you can't fire. The shield has a slower swap because it is so big, which is another balancing factor of the shield. You can't just go up to the guy and "bam bam" kill them. You have to swap it out, and they see what you are doing. And depending on what your secondary is, how fast you swap. They can stick semtex to your shield and blow you up.

There are different angles as well. I mean, to be truly effective with it you have to crouch because your feet aren't covered unless you are crouching. But then you are moving slower. You are more vulnerable. It definitely is a unique experience. And also, when it is taking hits you actually get the visual cracks on the shield. So eventually, if you are really good with the riot shield, eventually you can't seen anything anymore because there are nothing but bullet holes covering the shield.
Have you guys announced how many multiplayer maps you're going to ship with it?

No. There are lots.

Lots, okay. More than the original game came with?

Yes. Bigger in every way.

Nah, not 1v1, just on the same server, as long as you're not playing S&D - I hate S&D. 13 days maybe, but only recently have I got more kills then deaths.

M16 is a class weapon, with silencer for non-hardcore and with laser sight on hardcore. You can even use for quite long range with the ACOG. I like the ACOG for quick target aquisition but if you're trying to get your headshots achievements then it sucks - IMHO.

You pwned and I sucked. I even cleared off the desk (iMac + 22" screen + 2 external hard drives + Xbox + all the fookin wires) since I was so angry at getting killed 10 times in a row on Bog.

Towards the end of last night, I started playing some Hardcore HQ. I've never ranked up so quickly!! I even had some games where I got 600 points - and no I didn't finish any achievements. Of course with my luck the next round I got 20

Alright, weigh in here, people. What the hell is the point of the ACOG? I've been using it for a week and all the damn thing does is kill my precision.

Things finally came to a head last night when someone was prone on a building second floor, so I scoped him (to make the target bigger) and hit him with my M16, but couldn't finish him in the following shots, probably thanks to the damn ACOGs sway. After I burned through two clips, I switched to my M4 and preceded to drop the guy with just the red dot sight within moments.

The ACOG is for quick target acquisition, not precision. Don't try and get the headshot achievements using the ACOG. I've had the same experience as you with the ACOG, sometimes right on target and no kill. Notice the precision value drops for every weapon although the distance value increases.

I picked up an MP5 with ACOG the other night and did alright for a bit, might try it again with a personal class.

Yeah, ACOG blows, outside of short distance snipering.

I think my biggest gripe with the game is the damn grenades. Grenades seem to be a weapon that just can never be implemented well in a game. The ability to spam or waste them is so over-played. Aside from lag, I don't think there's a more frustrating death than dying to a grenade that some guy managed to peg you in the shoulder with from half-way across the map.

So I just noticed that they upped the stupid scoring system x 10 again... Now kills are worth 100 points (or xp). This means the initially impressive sounding 550 xp you'd receive if a teammate jacked your care package would be a much less impressive 55 xp under the old system. Still, repeatable bonuses are very cool.

Also: New Multi footage (UnOfficial)
Predator missile = teh sexay

---

So I finally reached Comander in 4. Over the past two weekends I've upped my k/d from 1.13 (roughly) to 1.23, and upped my best kill streak from 15 to 20. I'm going to be stepping away now, so I don't get sick of the game before 2 comes out.

(BTW, don't know if anyone else does this, but on certain maps I'll camp and listen for enemies approaching)

More complete list of accolades

They'll act much like medals in H3 (in that you can acrue them). From a glance at the list I imagine Sniper: Most stationary kills, Sneaker: Most time spent crouched and Lockdown: Most time spent in one place will be among my top earned.

Uber Camper. You brew up a coffee or two while playing? Colour of your tent?

Yeah, lots of people in hardcore choose the Dead Silence perk so they can creep around. A good combination is a silenced weapon, UAV jammer and dead silence to be virtually invisible in hardcore. Even in 'normal' its not bad but some weapons miss the extra oomph of Stopping power and/or Deep Impact.

Try WaW ?

Uber, my ass. Depends on the map, the weapon, the gametype. I am guilty of not pushing very often when I'm alone, I admit.

Well, I don't play HC, so I'm doing this when the UAV is down. Most notably on Ambush, but also on Bloc, and sometimes on Crossfire and Backlot when sniping.

Why?

I'm actually thinking I might throw my k/d into the wind and do HC this weekend if ODST fails to arrive (which looks likely).

Did I mention that in the game, if you call in an AC-130 and there's an enemy chopper, the AC-130 can shoot down the chopper (from above)?

EPIC

HC TDM is slower than TDM - because of the 10 second spawn delay. HC HQ is pretty good, but, if you get the Shipment map, its just pure frustration. I don't think that my tactics are quite good enough for HC HQ pwnage yet, even if I can get 600 points, the next round I really suck. Having a good team is important, even more so that other types IMHO. I'm not a fan of S&D, possibly because I'm not good enough (plus when you die you sit out the round which means a lot of non-playing time).

WaW isn't bad you know. Its not as 'clean' as MW, but for a 'same but a bit different' game you can have some fun. I find the bolt action rifles very difficult to master (no scope at first). I used to play a lot of rifle only (bolties only) CoD2 on the PC, but it just doesn't grab me on the Xbox.

I didn't realize the missiles on the helicopters actually did anything. Here they kill the guy that called it in.

So, info on this game is now leaking like mad as Devs take it home for testing. The number of maps in the retail package seems to be pegged around 17, which frankly is really refreshing as that is a huge number (Though I suspect it will be like Halo in that not everyone will be usable for every game type [Think shipment]).

I'm attempting to get to level 55 of Prestige 10 in MW before MW2 comes out. Got to Prestige 8 on Friday night and I'm up to level 27. Hardcore HQ matches are helping.

And the PC boys at work are furious that they'll have to wait a few weeks more.

Worse than waiting for Macworld or WWDC.

I'm curious what the rewards for Prestige will be this time around. Hopefully nothing but some dumb titles, because I'd hate to have to Prestige four times for some dumb thing I'd find useful.

Once you reach Prestige 100 you will have a bigger weapon than Ron Jeremy.

Call me cynical, but my first thought is this has to do with piracy.

Otherwise, gaming seems to be heading in the wrong direction.

As a mainly 360 player, it doesn't really make a difference to me. But it still sucks.

As for fighting piracy, the whole fight against piracy has always really been about controlling the audience. If you play a game in a way that wasn't intended, that's piracy. If you don't continue re-buying the games you already own, that's piracy. The guy even says as much in his announcement — "[It gives us] a lot more control … and that's a good thing."

Not that anyone cares, but I logged on to CoD4 yesterday (because its not like I can play ODST alone) and went 36-3 my first game (One death was thanks to the team spawning right next to me, another to an airstrike, but I can't complain too much because 1/3 of my kills were airstrike and helicopter kills). And then I logged off, because that was as good as things were gonna be. I"m unsure whether I can partly thank Halo for my skill that game (I also wonder if I was host).
