It is a pity, really. If I ever want to read another people input about my personal choice -Wii- it seems that I am harming people… of course I see no harm in that, and while I totally respect another people choices -you are not going to find any post under my name blaming PS3 or/and 360 even when I don't like SONY that much and totally dislike MS- I would really like they don't call me names because I still love Nintendo even when I am older than 15.

I don' think too many people think the ps3 is a bad deal per say. It's that the price is way too high for what the market will bear. With the 360, you have the option of not buying options you don't need, or buying them over time.

Personally I think the 360 is too expensive as well, which is why I'll probably only buy a Wii in the next 2-3 years.

The PS2 is not a bad deal, it's a bad idea. Blue-Ray isn't ready for the typical consumer, who is completely unwilling at this point to give up that DVD collection so soon after DVDs became mainstream themselves. Plus, the Blue-Ray drive is supposedly the biggest reason that the PS3 is so expensive.

The comparison is also a bit unfair, considering that most XBox 360 buyers aren't even thinking about the HD-DVD drive at this point. Also, not everyone cares about having a wireless controller (I certainly don't). You can have basic online play for free without getting the Gold subscription. It is nice that the PS3 has built-in wireless networking and the Blue-Ray player (I guess), but it's very nice that Microsoft gave options to people that didn't want to pay $600 for a machine.

I"ll maintain that it's absolutely silly for Sony to think that people are going to line up in droves for this. Certainly it will sell, but not anything close to the XBox 360, which will likely drop in price a bit while the PS3 still maintains a $600 tag.

Most people don't need hi-def video players. Sony is forcing everyone to have one and M$ is giving people the option. Same goes for the wireless capabilities. You also don't need a play and charge kit. I already have a ton of rechargeable batteries and I just use those.

Rechargable AA batteries are definately the cheapest route to take...i thought about it the other day if its a rechargable replacable Li-on battery,it'll probably cost $20 or something every 6-12 months (depending on use). With rechargable AAs...thats like the cheapest route....so im not too fussed about investing in em for the Wii.

Oh yeah, and arcade titles are to be $5 to $10! Way too much!

I'm also hearing word that Zelda is delayed, but don't hold me to that.

1 Wii
1 Wii remote
1 Nunchuck controller
1 AC adaptor
1 AV cable
1 stand

If Zelda is delayed again for the 10th time I am going to puke.

Remember how it was originally a GameCube title and I knew this would happen?

Live from New York
We're at Nintendo's Wii event. Live updates begin now!
by Matt Casamassina
September 14, 2006 - Nintendo's New York City Wii will begin in just a few minutes and IGN Wii's editorial team is on hand for live updates. Keep refreshing this page to find out exactly what's going on.

9:05 EST: Nintendo opens the doors to its event and people pile in.

9:10 EST: A stage shows a lovely oversized Wii font. A wide assortment of Wii kiosks -- still turned off -- sit to the right of the stage.

9:12 EST: Craig, Matt and Mark are tired. They pass the time by talking about the awesome GUI for Wii. Readers couldn't give a damn.

9:15 EST: NOA's VP of marketing and corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan takes the stage. Says Nintendo is going to get started and apologizes for being late. Promises to wrap things up quickly and then invites attendees to play Wii after the presentation.

9:15 EST: Mr. Iwata is in flight to Europe to join NOE for presentation later, Perrin says. Perrin says the presentation will last less than an hour and will be followed by a question and answer session.

9:16 EST: NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime takes stage. "Yes, we will reveal all of the relevant information for Wii. Date, price, how many, titles -- all of that information," Reggie says. "But more importantly, today marks our next planned step in driving this industry forward."

"Our strategy is based on one core belief: that the next step in gaming is bringing gaming back to the masses. It literally is that simple. Appealing to those current games as well as broadening this industry to new gamers," Fils-Aime adds.

9:18 EST: Talks about Nintendo DS. "So far in 2006, everyone is pleased with industry revenue growth that is just about 8 percent through August. But the main contributor to that success is Nintendo DS. If you back out DS growth from the equation, the total equation is 2 percent growth."

Speaks about Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for DS.

9:25 EST; Today, he says, Nintendo will explain its plans for altering the controller interface and the game.

Wii goes on sale November 19. "The worldwide debut of the Wii system happens right here in the Americas -- the same place where we debuted Nintendo DS. On November 19, it will be available at more than 25,000 points of distribution across the Americas. And with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $249.99. One price. One configuration. One color." Which is, for the record, white.

Plans to ship 4 million Wii consoles between launch and December 31. Americas will receive the largest share of stock.

Inside the box, you'll get the hardware, all the cables, the sensor bar. One Wii remote and one nunchuck controller.

Reggie says there are 40 demo units here today with more than two dozen Wii games. Some are updated versions of games and some are brand new -- that we've never seen before.

9:30 EST: Invites NOA player to show off Wii Sports Bowling. "Been designed from the ground up to be playable by absolutely everyone," player says.

To play the game, the controller is swung backward and then pushed forward -- almost like you'd hit a golf ball. It's as simple as that. You can give the ball spin by tilting the controller as you release.

9:33 EST: Reggie takes stage again. Says Wii Tennis Wii Golf, Wii Baseball, Wii Bowling and Wii Boxing are all included in the Wii Sports disc. Calls it a five-game compilation. "This is designed to get everyone involved playing." Game will be packed with Wii. Everyone'll get it when they buy the system.

"We'll also offer consumers the widest range of launch titles ever in the history of videogames. The list is big and -- as you'll see -- it's new and nostalgic. Unique. Delivering a brand new type of entertainment."

Talks about The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Says they'll have Excite Truck ready for Wii launch.

"With Wii sports, these titles represent a fantastic trio..."

"First time we have a Zelda title available on launch day. It gives us a huge boost and huge momentum right out of the box. It's a masterpiece game. We will continue to make those big masterpiece titles for the core gamer, as well as new games to drive market expansion."

"If you were to play Zelda all day to day for six hours, you'd only be scratching the surface..."

At the event hosted by Nintendo of Japan, there were 104 Wii games demonstrated.

9:35 EST: Shows list of third party games. Ubisoft, Midway, Konami, EA, Activision, and Vivendi, the latter of which has Ice Age 2 coming.

"A bridge to gaming for mainstream audiences," says EA's Larry Probst of Wii.

"In all, approximately 30 Wii games will be available at retail during the launch window. And about half of those will be available at launch," Reggie says. Games will be priced at $49.99.

Talks about Wii channels. "Not just Virtual Console, but a total effort to redefine who will use videogames in the future."

9:45 EST: 30 Virtual Console games by the end of the year. Beginning in January, Nintendo will deliver 10 more VC games per month.

9:48 EST: Bill Trinen takes stage to talk about Wii channels. Says that these channels will make non-gamers want to pick up the Wii. Trinen goes into the Mii channel, which enables users to create virtual versions of themselves. He says he wants to create Samuel L. Jackson. Modifies hair and face on a 3D model. Changes eyes. Changes nose. Changes lips. Gives him a mustache. Changes the color of his clothes. Enter his name. This is all done easily with the Wii-mote by pointing and clicking.

Bill goes into the photo channel. "For the first time ever, photo viewing is not a time-consuming thing." Take SD Card out of your digital camera, insert into the front flap on Wii and "boom -- you're looking at digital photos." The interface is smooth, fast and easy.

Shows iPhoto-like slideshow feature complete with Ken Burns-style zooms and pans.

Shows off a movie-playack mode. You can apparently transfer home-brew movies to your Wii, view them and modify them in real-time.

10:00 EST: Reggie takes the stage. "When connected to the Internet, users have access to news and weather channels." News is constantly updated via WiiConnect24. Also a Wii message board where users can send messages and photos to other Wii owners; or to PC owners or cell phone. You can also leave messages on a calendar-based note system.

Chats about WiiConnect24. More aspects will be shared later, he says.

Back to channels. You can download the Opera Web browser using Wii points. So you'll need to buy it. Then you can surf the Net.

"We want consumers to come to rely on their Wii channels every day. Because then it's a short hop from using the Wii remote to playing their first game."

Reggie recaps. First, a revolutionary new way to play game. Second, the ability to time travel to the best of legacy content. The biggest combined software launch in history. Fourth, the unique channel system acting as a pied piper for new gamers. And finally, a price poiint that says mass market ready from day one.

Question and Answer Session Begins

Q: How much are the remotes?

A: Wii remote is $39.99 and the nunchuck attachment is $19.99.

Q: What's up with Zelda for GameCube?

A: Zelda GameCube launches on December 11.

Q: What's the cost of accessing the Internet?

A: No cost through our system. You need an Internet connection at your home. Wii is Wi-Fi enabled.

Q: First-party games will be $49.99. Will third parties price at $59.99?

A: We encourage third parties to price appropriately.

Question about 16:9 games that can't be answered.

Q: Talk about integration between DS and Wii.

A: In the future we'll talk about that.

Q: Metroid Prime 3?

A: 2007 game.

Q: When we can we expect to play games online for Wii and what kind of interface?

A: What's been announced in Japan is that the first online multiplayer game is going to be Pokemon Battle that will be launching during their launch window in Japan. When can you expect that here in the US? Shortly thereafter.

Q: How will the Wii Points be translated to Canada?

: 2,000 Wi points will be $24 Canadian.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I dunno Adam, I was pretty open to being impressed but much of that looks way worse than I was expecting. Many of those games look like the Xbox Live arcade stuff (virtual games) with the mediocre graphics. NO I am not saying graphics make a game but they do help with the suspension of dis-belief. The system menus just look like the DS and rather bland, nothing compared to the new golden standard of the 360 (surprisingly).

Also watching those demo's I had a concern. It comes with Golf, bowling etc. That is fine and good but do typical people have the physical space to stand up, swing controllers and bowl virtual balls?

I have what I think is an above average game setup but do I have room to do all that? Not really. Even if I sit at the edge of the coutch I still can only extend my arm back so far.

Even more troubling if these games are made to be played standing up 99% of TV's are at eye level when sitting down so towering over a medium to small size TV looking down at the screen isn't the most immersive setup. Also with modern TV's the viewing angles aren't good enough to do that.

Troubling.

Not too bad. Cube controllers are still $25-$30.

I'm disappointed too

$60 for an extra controller (controller + nunchaka)? That sucks. So you are looking at $300+ right out the gate if you want to play it with your kids. And $5 for a old game that they already made their millions on?? I don't think so!

I was *this* close to getting one on reserve, but now I am glad that I didn't.

Sad, sad, sad. Nintendo was really close to getting a good market share again. Sigh. Maybe a new poll should be put up to see how many people will still get one.

Also keep in mind that Nintendo has already resold you these "classic" games at least 3x before.

Mario's were ported to GameBoy, Mario 64 to DS.. etc. Now they want to sell you the same damn game again and I somehow doubt they will add widescreen support or better graphics. Not only that but they want to you buy a different controller just for that! Also many Nintendo fans still have all these old games on carts (I have a hundred) so I will feel stupid buying a 20 year old game when I got it sitting next to me along with the old hardware to match.

With Xbox live the downloadable "classic" games have at least been modernized to support the new capabilities of the hardware such as better HD graphics, widescreen, AI etc. Geometry wars is a good example as it looks wicked cool yet old school at the same time.

I didn't think the keynote had any additional good news. My quibbles with what was announced:

• No classic controller shell included with the Wii?
• The price for virtual console games is a little high. I'll be buying the classics, but there certainly won't be any buying sprees.
• Is photo output and video output HD? Not that it matters, I won't be using that feature.
• No Mario Galaxy until next year.

Aside from that, I'm not bothered by the price.

Yup. They're probably trying to force people to use the new stuff, but a lot of people would like to start with something they're familiar with.

I strongly agree. I think it would do Nintendo a HUGE favor to launch with a bundled mario game, a la NES, SNES, N64.

The price is the last thing that bothers me. $200-$600 I could care less. I am worried how they expect me to bowl or play golf waving arms around even though I have a setup 10x better than the average user.

I mean really, picture yourself in the room where it will be played on pulling your arm back far to hit a bat, standing to golf and bowl etc. Do you have to move a bed? Table? Heck put the TV on a high shelf?

Even if you can accomplish the movements by sitting and making smaller gestures does that really accomplish the goal of immersive play if all it takes to swing a bat is a tiny flick of the wrist?

Nintendo should have learnt that lesson with Luigi's Mansion on the cube's launch. I mean really.

That's their staple, and everyone is antsy since SMS was not a 'true' Mario. They could move some serious product that way.

OK just so I know I am not crazy and think I am the only one... can you guys take a pic of the room that you would hook up the Wii to if you got it? I gotta see if on average nobody has coffee tables, TV's that are at eye level at 6 feet when standing and if you have room to swing a bat, bowl and golf.

- The first thing that caught my eye was the launch date..... they are literally launching after SONY. I thought they'd seize the opportunity and launch at LEAST a week before SONY....maybe they didnt learn their lesson with the GameCube ?

-The Price. reasonable, just cause they are including the nunchuck and Wii Sports in the package. Im all about bundled "demo" software, but i think a modernized version of Duckhunt would have suffised for a Wii-pack in.

-The VC games are overpriced. simple as that. they are over priced.

-Mario Galaxy and Metroid delayed to 2007. It makes business sence.....they want a healthy line up for the first 6-9 months. And since Zelda was initially slated for the GCN, they might as well make a silmuaneous release....hey who knows...Link might replace Mario as the mascot ?

-Launh library looks healhy....as well as first year set of titles in development

Personally, i worried about the launch dates and the VC prices.

Cheers

I agree 100%... i personally think the GCN performed the way it did because of a lack of a mario launch title. If i were Ninttendo, The #1 priority on my list would be...launch with a mario game, if not bundled...at least on shelf.

Metroid was delayed until next year? Looks like I won't be getting my next gen goodness until next year. Halo 3, Metroid, and SMG are all next year.

I think we could still see another delay from Sony. And remember, there are going to be a lot of people without PS3's. There are going to be extreme launch shortages on that.

I don't, but then again, I don't really have a gaming setup either. I don't really plan on playing Wii Sports. More likely I'll just sit on my bed and play Zelda.

My predicition: Failure.

The PS3, despite everything bad people have been saying about it, will punce all over the Wii (and I'm not a Sony fanboy...everyone knows I buy all the consoles). The 360 already beats the crap out of the Wii.

Sorry, Reg...the Wii blows.

SWG: My living room is a bit bigger than yours, but set up the same. Coffee table SMACK DAB in the middle. Does that mean I have to move the f'n table every time I want to play with the Wii?

F that.

My living room is slightly larger, but I'd still have to move an ottoman and a coffee table to play while looking at a tv below me.

Wow, we all agree with this and Nintendo has no clue. How depressing. Its not like we're the only ones.

Easy. They've started pricing harderware higher and higher. So to make it look more 'reasonable' they start including features such as you mention to make it look like less of a rip-off.

My prediction: Success

-Lower cost (hardware, software and services)
-Large library in development
-New innovative interface that is aimed towards non-gamers
-Small and quiet
-Healthy supply of units

Economically speaking.... lower price, uniqueness, healthy support and good supply = success

Oh....and for the record...higher specs does not equal success (PSP, XBox).

Cheers
