In case some of you are awake, we will be having live coverage of the event (thanks to macrumors) of the expo keynote. The keynote starts at 4amEST/1am PST) Goto irc.macnn.com and join the channel #appleexpo

You can get a decent IRC client here

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12666

irc.macnn.com is already on the list in that client, you'll just have to enter the channel by typing /join #appleexpo in the window.

see ya there !

Cool! When I wake up in the morning, the new iMac should be on the Apple web site!

Hmm, I just might have to stay up for this. We're pretty much guaranteed to have a new iMac, right?

Proves that if they can cram a g5 into that, they can cram one into a notebook.

A 2" PowerBook? What is the weight going to be? Nah...

And what about the power cunsumption of three fans?

What about the fysical fact that heat goes up, like in the new iMac, where PowerBooks are supposed to lay down?
Nah...(2)

Apparently opening up the back is very very simple, so it's gonna be a lot better than the G4 iMac.

I'm not too fond of it. It looks like it wouldn't be hard to knock it over by accident.

I hate to say it but the Gateway thing that has been out for over a year looks like a bettter design, not as sleek but more functional

Maybe it looks more difficult than it really is. I'd hate to have to dissassemble other components to replace a hard drive or a graphics card.

Visually, I like it better than the lamp-imac.

The lamp iMac had that "Holy S***!" effect on anybody seeing it for the first time. This new one, which looks sort of like the front two inches sliced off an eMac, will not wow with its looks. It's in every way a superior machine, but I guess we've become spoiled with the asthetics.

Hallooooo!!!! That's gateway you're talking about, the company with one of the worst reputations when it comes to quality. Given that poorer quality PC laptops often start breaking at the hinges after a short while, this seems to me to just beg to break it's crappy joint.

I look forward to seeing a rebroadcast. It seems that now we are off to PowerBook G5 speculation. Let the games begin again.

This in no way means they can do a PB G5... it is still twice the width of a PB, and doesn't need to run on batteries. As mentioned above, I would not like a 15 or 20lb PB that is 2 inches thick and only gets 15 minutes of battery life!

Optimistically, I say new PB at MWSF Jan 2005, if not later.

Cheers!

So we got a G5 iMac.

I mean that is a good thing I'm but not in the market for one. Phil Schiller spent all that time on stage and all he gave us was one new product. Nothing else the whole world didn't already know about since WWDC.

Do we have to have Steve Jobs before anything big happens?

Hope we don't have to wait for the next major conference before Apple brings us some of the other things on the rumour sites' wish lists.

I just watched the Expo Keynote and two things struck me (in this order):

1. Phil Schiller did very well - he was quite charming while no Steve Jobs he made his points well.

2. I LOVE THE NEW iMac!! YEAH!!! [insert photo of Ballmer]

Only bad thing about it is the graphics card, but that is typically Apple to screw that one up. That said, only *one* flaw? Yes, this is one solid design and very affordable as well. Looking good Apple!
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

A few problems with that Gateway:

1) It's ugly as f*ck.
2) The computer is located at the base, not integrated with the display.
3) The Gateway isn't compatible with any VESA attachments.
4) I can't imagine how that thing is more functional than the iMac.
5) Having experience with past compact Gateway machines, I guarantee that trying to install a HD, RAM, or other upgrade into that thing will result in the loss of no fewer than 3 fingers.

Kinda like the generation 2 iMac? The design Jobs said Apple chose over the 3rd gen iMac because of some nonsense about drive alignment...

Funny how it's not a bad thing when Apple does it, but it is when others do. I really am starting to think 2004 is 1999 for Apple. In 1999, MP3 playback in your car with a hard drive was done with some cheesy CD changer interface that limited you and provided no track info on the stereo. 2004, Apple and BMW release the iPod link, that does exactly this...

1999, several computer manufacturers released all in one units with an LCD, and the guts behind it. 2004, Apple dos the same.

The new iMac is nice. The old one was too. The CRT, not so much so.
