I want to be able to do a complete backup to my new 250 GB external firewire hard drive and also have a folder on there where I can store large video files. The problem is Super Duper deletes everything on the destination drive when doing backups. And its "Smart Update" features seems useful, except it's only for keeping the same files on both drives — I want to keep some extra files on the firewire drive.
Would partitioning the drive allow me to do this? I could theoretically allocate 60 GB to copying my Powerbook's HD and use the rest as storage. And what software is good for partitioning? I found iPartition, but it's not free: http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php
Thanks!

I also tried Carbon Copy Cloner, but its synchronization feature isn't working. I'm on 10.4.2 and yet when I try to backup, it tells me, "The current version of pysync is not compatible with Panther. For now, turn off the synchronization options until an update is available." What the heck? I'm not even on Panther! I have 2.3, too. Anyone know what's going on here?

Good idea. I've never partitioned before, but it was incredibly easy. Way to go, Apple! I set 60 GB for backup and the rest, 170 GB, for random storage. Works great!

awesome... what drive did you get? I just ordered myself a 200GB external drive from OWC, and plan to do nearly the same (that is, partition off 60GB to keep a full backup of my internal drive and use the rest for other storage and misc. backups).

I got a Western Digital external firewire drive. Although the Retrospect software never worked, crashed when I opened it, I am pretty satisfied. It has told me I can't eject it a lot, though, saying files on it are in use, which has baffled me.
