For those that dont know New Orleans, its way below sea level, and this hurricane is going to distroy the city for a long time. Those that pray, pray for the city because it will need it.

How exactly will prayers be needed in a post-category-5-hurricane area?

I'd say a check for 10 billion dollars would be a good start.

Well the damage assessment would be after the fact, no? For now all we can do is pray... unless you happen to be in that area in which case I say, don't stay put--do what they tell you to do cause its probably for the best!

I'm about 50 miles outside of N.O. right now. I was driving around on I-10 earlier and all I can say is fuuuhuuuuuuuuhuuuuccccck. Poor folks. Had to be 30 miles of solid cars sitting on the interstate.

Pray if you want, but I'd prefer is you'd send generators. And satellite internet doesn't sound too bad right now either.

I for one will say a prayer... if you can't bring yourself to pray we'll try to understand but sarcasm is totally bull.

Why? Because they chose to live in a region that doesn't get pummeled by hurricanes on a (more or less) frequent basis?

And on a more serious note - good luck to the folks in N.O. Praying's not my thing but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I think that its a better idea to pray for those poor news people that have to go out there in the middle of the ****ing hurricane to report that there are "high winds and a lot of rain." No kidding.

I just pray my brother gets out safely. Joke all you want, but when family is involved, it's different. I lived in Louisiana for 12 years and believe me, the loss of New Orleans is traumatic.

I lived there 40 years ago when a hurricane named Betsy came through at about this time of year. The mayor told everyone to stand in the middle of the street and wait for a bus to save you. The town survived although we were without power and air conditioning for four days. Living in a northern climate now, I can tell you that it is a lot worse to be without power for four days (second Clinton inaugural) after an ice storm. Cold is baaad.

I'm sad for the folks down there. Hopefully, Katrina will have some mercy.

On another note, I am glad that I finally got a chance to visit New Orleans this past spring (Jazzfest), because it looks as if that city is going to be trashed a good bit.

I dont think many people realize how serious this is. This is a 1 in 500 year storm for the area. There have been only 3 Cat 5 storms that have hit the main land, but they where not even half the size of this one. This storm is massive in size and power. Its not the most powerful but its size is going to distroy **** loads. Peopel in the northern states are going to suffer from this storm too. New Orleans is going to be distroyed if its a worst case storm which it looks like it. It could be months before they can get all the water out. 1.5 million people wont be able to return home for months. Those that are joking around, shame on you. Most of us live in places that could suffer a big disaster, Vancouver, Seattle, San Fransico, LA earth quakes, St Loius Earth quakes, Florida, Texas Storms, central States/Canada storms...

The ancient Aztecs worshipped a rain god known for his horrible temper. They called him Huracán, from which we get the word "hurricane"; the Spanish conquistadors dropped the word straight into their own language and English picked it up from there. Looking at storms like this, we can see why the conquistadors would name the storms after the foreign god said to cause them.

Considering the overhyping new stations like to do I have not heard all this doom and gloom from them.

Worst case scenarios are just that, scenarios. I'm sure it will be awful, my heart goes out to those who may suffer, but lets not make rash exaggerations about the end of society due to a hurrcaine.

Andrew did 26 billion dollars worth of damage, this looks to be around that. Life goes on.

THERE HAVE BEEN SOME MODEST CHANGES IN THE STRUCTURE OF KATRINA OVER
THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS. RECENT MICROWAVE PASSES SHOW THAT AN OUTER
EYEWALL IS IN THE FORMATIVE STAGES...AND THE LATEST IR IMAGES SHOW
A LESS WELL-DEFINED EYEWALL WITH MORE EVIDENCE OF OUTER BANDING.
THE NOAA HURRICANE HUNTERS ALSO REPORTED AN EROSION OF THE EYEWALL
IN THE SOUTHWEST QUADRANT. THESE OBSERVATIONS SUGGEST THAT THERE
COULD BE SOME WEAKENING OF KATRINA PRIOR TO LANDFALL. ALL THIS IS
RELATIVE...HOWEVER...AND KATRINA IS STILL EXPECTED TO BE OF AT
LEAST CATEGORY FOUR INTENSITY WHEN IT REACHES THE COAST. AN EYEWALL
REPLACEMENT AT THIS POINT IS NOT ALL GOOD NEWS
...AS THEY ARE
GENERALLY ACCOMPANIED BY A BROADENING OF THE WIND FIELD...SO THAT
EVEN AS KATRINA WEAKENS THERE COULD BE AN INCREASE IN THE AREA THAT
EXPERIENCES MAJOR HURRICANE FORCE WINDS.
Yikes.

I was thinking the same thing, but people more "in the know" would just step on me, so I tend to not voice it, regardless of how many hurricanes decide to take a swipe at florida and the gulf coast. At least they havent come for us good people on the eastern seaboard lately

What I do find funny, in a sort of ironic way, is that thanks to the progress of science, we no longer have to attribute natural disasters to god.

Instead, we can now blame America for every catastrophe!

Heat wave in France? America is probably causing it.

Indian Ocean tsunamis? America probably knew about it and didn't tell anyone.

AIDS virus ravaging Africa? America probably created it.

America is getting hit by a massive hurricane? They have created it, now they must deal with it!

Pay up.

New Orleans is a beautiful town, laden with history. I'd really hate to see it flood. It'll be a bad humanitarian disaster, but it looks like the storm has weakened enough that it's possible the levees will hold.

It'd actually look more like; "God, we thank you for the beauty and the benevolence 360 days of the year and from 1969 to the present for we know it was on this benevolence that massive structures like the SuperDome exist and the various other resorts and hotels lining the otherwise peaceful shores. Lord, we ask that you be merciful on those who would build their livelihoods in a man-made valley between two, 15' levies. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do. Forgive the drunkards in the taverns who would laugh at this force, forgive those Lord who are tired of evacuating for bloated threats by an excitable media over less severe storms in the past. Lord, forgive those who would place their faith in the construction of man and not the benevolence of You O Lord. Be merciful Lord and may the laborers be bountiful in comforting the afflicted among those who have sought refuge and be with those who may not be as fortunate. I thank you in advance Lord knowing that those whose eyes are upon you, historically will be most quick to help in the form of labor, money, and sustainance. Amen."
