...Landscape notes with email functionality.

What "missing" app do you want?

Copy/Paste (not exactly an app but still crucial)
Notes that sync
ssh client
Landscape Mail
Keychain with sync
Skype
iChat

(in that order)

It would be interesting if Apple allowed Skype to make an app. While I doubt it would happen, if it did, if would be a big FU to AT&T from Apple. To a degree...

Why not? They allowed TruFone into the app store. Having said that, I'd jailbreak my phone for a decent, unofficial Skype client.

And I second lemmings. And I want to see more than basic GPS functionality.

So the iPhone can only display email in portrait mode - interesting. I thought all or most of the core apps could be used in portrait or landscape mode.

Good to know

I want a way to make icon shortcuts to various iPhone features.

I want a button on my home screen that instantly calls my wife, a button that starts my favorite playlist, a button that toggles 2G and 3G with one push, etc...

Similar to the safari shortcuts on the home page, only for other features. You could set it for whatever you want.

I don't think this could be done with an App though, Apple would have t build it into the OS.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Check the app store. It's called Mating Call and does one thing and one thing only - call your wife/husband/boy/girlfriend/lover/significant other/life partner/etc

1) Terminal (edit: with BASH)
2) Skype
3) Office for iPhone
4) Doom (the original version would be fine!)
5) not really an app, but something that allows a regular USB or Bluetooth keyboard to be used

Landscape mode for email and SMSes.

Icon buttons to turn 3g/WiFi/Bluetooth on/off without having to go into the settings button and search though.

Copy-and-paste functionality.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I agree with moep, we need a remote wipe application.

Also,

- Landscape keyboard available on all apps
- Cut & Paste
- A chat program that works with multiple services (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, IRC, etc.)
- MMS (People send me MMS messages all the time. They're a PITA to view on the iPhone.)
- A voice dialer that actually works. Unlike those two crappy apps already availble at the App Store.
- xbox live friends app. (It's coming soon)

Slick shoes?! Are you crazy?!

I would love a simple app that acts just as a button or buttons to turn on or off the 3g, location services and Wi-fi as separate buttons so I can use each individually and shut them down to save battery on the fly..

without navigating through settings menus

apple?

I'd like to be able to access files on my Mac or another server, and if they're playable mp3/mp4 files, I'd like to be able to play them. Maybe something like this already exists? I know telekinesis does this, but anything on the app store?

What if there was a way to call your phone and enter a code that would lock it and put a message on the screen with your contact info? That would be cool.

Real Games, like Mario, Sonic, RPG's, Real Racing games.
The iPhone is capable of much more, but it takes time and I am impatient.

First and foremost: iPhone is marvellous, despite a number of lacking properties. To amend these, Apple would have to implement the following features:

- System-wide implementation of ShapeWriter, with support for the following languages: proper (e.g., British) English; Italian, Dutch, German, French and Russian; editable dictionary database (in any language), and graphically more appealing interface (as is iPhone's default keyboard) than the current WritingPad.

- System-wide horizontal keyboard orientation, much as in Safari

- System-wide multiple clipboard manager

- Better MIME support (for a greater variety of files)

- Proper iWork and MS Office support with protocols such as .rtf; rtfd; .Pages; .KeyNote; .pp; .Numbers; .doc (as opposed to read-only)

- Enhanced GPS functionality

- A shortcut to 3G switch (or a rearrangement of the current one)

- Greater battery life (I suspect this wouldn't be possible without upgrading the components)

- Skype

- IM client (iChat; Gtalk; MSN; Yahoo; Jabber, etc.) with audio(-video) support

- External keyboard support (via Bluetooth or wired/docked)

I'm sure, Apple would manage all the above with the same ease with which a lion would tear a villageful of unarmed squalid masai to stenchy pieces. Most likely it will, much of it, in course of the coming months.

Isn't that just connecting your laptop to your wifi? hard to think that you would have an iphone and not have a wireless card for your laptop.

Halo 3
Gran tourismo 4

How about reasonably priced versions of the following:
Pacman, Ms. Pacman, Galaga, Asteroids.

That Crash Bandicoot game proves the iphone can serve as a real gaming platform, but unfortunately (at least as far as I have been able to determine), that's still the only decent game on the device. I'd like to see more.

GPS with voice navigation.

Flash support (so I can watch hulu on my phone).

I said "reasonably priced". OK, the asteroids clone is reasonably priced, but it's not asteroids. And the others either don't exist, or are $10 each, which I don't view as reasonable.

A bar code reader that uses the camera to read them and look up product info on the web would be cool. If my dvcam can read barcodes, this might be a plausible.

Also, since Apple's doesn't work, a way to send a photo from library to a MobileMe gallery.

before I buy an iPhone, I need to see good apps for:

voice dialing

turn-by-turn navigation like TomTom, with maps on the device and no communication (other than satellite) required

full search in the contacts DB, like Address Book. I need to find things in the notes field

security -- the ability to wipe the device by text message in case I lose it

and, like everyone else, copy and paste system wide

Are you using any smartphone right now ?

Does it ALL you're asking for ?

I sometimes wonder about the high demands that people have.
Yes, all that would be nice, but the lack of it doesn't render the iPhone a useless product.

Note that he never said that. He said that he wants that before he buys an iPhone. That is a perfectly legitimate statement. His needs are his thing. They're just as valid as anybody else's even if they are high. There's no need to be defensive about it.

In addition to the above, I'd like an app the streams live TV and/or cable channels. As long as it didn't have that poor jerky motion quality that streamed content on other phones has.

Oh geez, grow up for Pete's sake.

He wrote

And you answered with
Yes, all that would be nice, but the lack of it doesn't render the iPhone a useless product.
And I pointed out that your answer to his post entirely missed the point he was trying to make (and the entire purpose of this thread). That's all there is to it. No need to make things personal if they aren't.

Hence a "I wish for" thread like this. Did you see the subject line.

No, but the wish list is what people would like to see to make it a better product in their view.

A full fledged photo app--well, fuller fledged. Give me shutter speed and a timer and I'll buy it ASAP. Also, on the accessories front, someone needs to make a pretty version of the flash module that hit the web some time ago. Great concept, and easily doable...I think.

Griffin, I'm looking directly at you--you could handle both of these.
